Allow abstraction of ECMP and Routes Installable #2

Currently we have 2 ways of specifying ECMP

  1. Via compilation of FRR
  2. Via runtime specification

Let's add a 3rd ability to query the kernel( or relevant api ) for any underlying hardware abstraction

Then after we have this input. Choose the min of the 3 to use at run time

Also add the same thing for # of routes. Some hardware has a limitation on the # of routes that can be installed. Allow the code to smartly understand that.

Hello,

unless i misunderstood, I do not agree with proposed solution.
I understand that if enable-multipath=64 is set by compilation, and bgpd command maximum-path 32 is chosen, and if the kernel support for multipath is 1, then that means that BGP global RIB does not support ECMP routes.

If this is the correct understanding, then I disagree. Unless the 3rd ability impacts only zebra. Meaning that BGP will still be able to handle ECMP routes in its global RIB.
Reason is that sometimes the Frr may be used as purely controlplane feature, not related to dataplane ( since openvswitch will be configured separately to configure the kernel stuff instead through a SDNc).

I think this might be in support of various chip set's ability to modify the next hop rather than just replace the entire route (?) -- what you'd need to know in this case is what the max number of next hops (ie the size of the ecmp group) is that the hardware chipset can support, so zebra doesn't overrun that number, and blow up the modification of the ecmp group at the hardware level.

How would zebra get this information, though? Is there an existing api in that direction (from sai, open nsl, or just flat out from the chip api)?

I could be all wrong in reading the bug by Donald, though -- so ignore me if I'm blathering nonsense. :-)

So we have several issues here:

Hardware ECMP support
Kernel ECMP support
Zebra ECMP support

Currently there is no methodology to have any of these 3 layers know about what is supported under them.

Additionally one can use the zebra FPM manager to tell the hardware about the route, and bypass kernel installation altogether

What I am proposing here is the creation of a API where zebra can ask for the underlying ECMP supported and dissallow the exact situation you are concerned about above at the level of zebra.

I was going to write this code so that it was abstract enough that zebra just asks for total ECMP and whomever is programming for a particular piece of hardware can have zebra do the right thing. I could then write handlers for my hardware types and have them return the right thing.

Long term I would suggest that the Linux kernel needs to get an API where it could report on the underlying hardwares ECMP and then we could just write that bit of code to get it via a handler.

* rip_interface.c: Default for split_horizon_default differed between
rip_interface_new and rip_interface_reset, causing at least some issues
after interface events. See patchwork FRRouting#604. Fix, and consolidate code.

(rip_interface_{reset,clean}) rename these to 'interface', as that's more
appropriate. Spin the ri specific bodies of these functions out to
rip_interface_{reset,clean} helpers. Factor out the overlaps, so
  rip_interface_reset uses rip_interface_clean.

  (rip_interface_new) just use rip_interface_reset.

* ripd.h: Update for (rip_interface_{reset,clean})

Reported by xufeng zhang, with a suggested fix on which this commit expands.
See patchwork FRRouting#604. This commit addresses only the split-horizon
discrepency, issue #2. The other issue they reported, #1, is not addressed,
though suggested fix seems inappropriate.

There is no control on the returned nexthop group entry, when
finding pic contexts. Actually the pic context can resolve
over itself, and this may lead to stack overflow:

The below can be found by generalizing the search of pic nhe
for all nexthops and not only for srv6 contexts.

Fix this by not returning a nexthop group entry when creation is
necessary for pic context.
Add a check when the pic creation is not needed and the returned
nhe has the same identifier as the requested nhe.

… the neighbor status remains UP

Test Scenario:
RouterA and RouterB are in the same routing domain and have configured a P2P link. RouterA is configured with "is-type level-1" while RouterB is configured with "is-type level-1-2". They establish a level-1 UP neighborship. In this scenario, we expect that when RouterB's configuration is switched to "is-type level-2-only", the neighborship status on both RouterA and RouterB would be non-UP. However, RouterB still shows the neighbor as UP.

Upon receiving a P2P Hello packet, the function "process_p2p_hello" is invoked. According to the ISO/IEC 10589 protocol specification, section 8.2.5.2 a) and tables 5 and 7, if the "iih->circ_type" of the neighbor's hello packet does not match one's own "circuit->is_type," we may choose to take no action.
When establishing a neighborship for the first time, the neighbor's status can remain in the "Initializing" state. However, if the neighborship has already been established and one's own "circuit->is_type" changes, the neighbor's UP status cannot be reset. Therefore, when processing P2P Hello packets, we should be cognizant of changes in our own link adjacency type.

Topotest has identified a core issue during testing.

When LAN links and P2P links share the` circuit->u` of a neighbor, if one link is no longer in use and the union is not cleared, the other link is unable to pass the non-empty check, resulting in accessing an invalid pointer. Unfortunately, for non-DIS devices in LAN links, `circuit->u.bc.run_dr_elect[x]` is essentially always 1, but in `isis_circuit_down()`,` circuit->u.bc.run_dr_elect[x] `will not be cleared because `circuit->u.bc.is_dr[x]` is always 0. Consequently, when switching to a P2P link, `isis_circuit_circ_type_set()` does not reset the link in a non-C_STATE_UP state, leading to subsequent accesses of `circuit->u.p2p.t_send_p2p_hello` resulting in a non-empty yet invalid address.

I believe that in `isis_circuit_down()`, the LAN link should unconditionally clear `circuit->u.bc.run_dr_elect[x]`.

Configuring the same in vtysh configure interactive mode works properly.
When using "vtysh -f", the northbound compatible configuration is
committed together whereas, in interactive mode, it committed line by
line. In the first situation, in validation state nb_running_get_entry()
fails because the area not yet in running.

Do not use nb_running_get_entry() northbound validation state.

It happens with FRR using the kernel. During shutdown, the
namespace identifier is attempted to be obtained by zebra, in an
attempt to prepare zebra dataplane nexthop messages.

Fix this by accessing the ns structure.

When shutdown a LAN-type circuit, and if the current device is not the DIS (assuming it is a level-1 device), the isis_circuit_down() function will not call the isis_dr_resign() function to clear the circuit->u.bc.run_dr_elect[0] bit (this bit is set on interfaces in the isis_run_dr() function). After switching the link to a P2P type, since u.p2p and u.bc form a union, and circuit->u.bc.snpa = "\000\000\000\000\000" and circuit->u.bc.run_dr_elect = "\001", this results in circuit->u.p2p.neighbor = 0x1000000000000. Consequently, the value of adj->sysid accesses a wild pointer, causing the current crash.
