CEDS

The Community Emissions Data System (CEDS) produces consistent estimates of global air emissions species (BC, CO, CO2, NH3, NMVOC, NOx, OC, SO2) over the industrial era (1750 - present) along with CH4 and N2O over recent decades. The system is written in R and uses open-source data (with the exception of the IEA energy statistics which must be purchased from IEA). CEDS is publicly available through an Open Source License.

Data Releases

2024 Gridded Data Release: December 3, 2024 (v_2024_11_25)

Global gridded emissions from 1750-2022 at 0.5° for the v_2024_04_01 data are now available on ESGF [Search for: mip_era = CMIP6Plus; institution_id = PNNL-JGCRI]. Checksum files archived at zenodo.

0.1° data from 1980 - 2022 will be available shortly.

Major features include:

  • Updated gridding proxies overall
  • Improved location of large point source emitters, particularly for SO2
  • New implementation of seasonality, including sub-annual impacts during COVID

July 2024 Release: July 08, 2024 (v_2024_07_08)

This data and code release updates small issues with the preliminary April 01, 2024 release, which extended emissions to 2022.

  • Corrected a historical GBR SO2 discontinuity before 1850 in smelting SO2 emissions
  • Other small historical corrections to smelting SO2 before 1850
  • Small corrections to historical NOx and NH3 emissions

We encourage comments on this data. The best way to comment on the data is through the CEDS Issues page.

A journal paper describing this dataset is in preparation. A notice will be updated here and sent to the CEDS listserv when this is available.

Documentation of CEDS assumptions and system operation, including a user guide, are available at the CEDS project wiki and in the journal papers noted below.

Current issues with the data or system are documented in the CEDS Issues system in this GitHub repository. Users can submit issues using this system. These can include anomalies found in either the aggregate or gridded emissions data. Please use an appropriate tag for any submitted issues. Note that by default only unresolved issues are shown. All issues, including resolved issues, can be viewed by removing the "is:open" filter. Issues relevant for CMIP6 data releases are tagged with a “CMIP6” label (note that issues will be closed when resolved in subsequent CEDS data releases, but are still available for viewing.)

Further information can also be found at the project web site, including a link to a page that provides details for obtaining gridded emission datasets produced by this project. You can also sign up for data release announcements from the CEDSinfo listserv following the instructions on the project web site.

If you plan to use the CEDS data system for a research project you are encouraged to contactRachel Hoesly or Steve Smith so that we can coordinate with any on-going work on the CEDS system and make sure we are not duplicating effort. CEDS is research software, and we will be happy to help and make sure that you are able to make the best possible use of this system.

Users should use the most recent version of this repository, which will include maintenance updates to address documentation or usability issues. Major changes that alter emission estimates or system structure and use will be noted in the release notes.

CEDS has only been possible through the participation of many collaborators. Our collaboration policy is that collaborators who contribute unpublished data used in CEDS updates will be included as co-authors on the journal paper that describes the next CEDS major release. We particularly encourage contributions of updated emission information from countries or sectors not well represented in the data currently used in CEDS.

Previous Versions

April 2024 Release: April 1, 2024 (v_2024_04_01)

This data and code release updates driver and emissions data throughout and extends the emissions time series to 2022.

Major features include:

  • Emissions estimates to 2022
  • Updated default data from IEA, Energy Institute, EDGAR, and others
  • Updates to country inventories used for scaling
  • Refined recent year extension of liquid fuels
  • Emissions data now released with fuel and sector detail
  • Expanded representation of the metal smelting sector

April 2021 Release: April 21, 2021 (v_2021_04_21)

This release updates emissions for four isos: Australia, Canada, South Korea, and Taiwan as shown in Figure S9 here. Global trends are similar to the v_2021_02_05 release. Global gridded emission data have also been produced with updated spatial distributions for most sectors.

Feb 2021 Release: February 05, 2021 (v_2021_02_05)
