Replace "Database" by "Library" in the translation #2095
Comments
A remark: Bibtexing, the official BibTeX specification uses the term "database file". |
Current state: We changed the localization (#2550) and will change the code gradually. |
I noticed that this change messed up the Italian translation.
Some help from other translators would be much appreciated. |
It should be "Bibliothek" in German. I have to check.
Is it easy to check Mendely, Zotero, or similar apps how they translate in
Italian?
We did not want to use "file", because its too technical. We dropped
"database" to avoid confusion with SQL databases.
"libreria" sounds best :)

I noticed that this change messed up the italian translation.
The word "database" was kept untraslated in the Italian translation, since
it is commonly used. However replacing all occurrences of "database" with
in the .properties files produced some very odd translations. The reason is
the different grammatical gender of the two words in Italian: "database" is
masculine, but "library" if left untraslated, would be feminine, as the
corresponding meaning "biblioteca". Therefore all the inflections are wrong
(articles, verbs, adjectives).
So, to fix the translation we have some options:
- put back "database" in the translation (in other languages the change
had not such effect, e.g. "Datebank" in german)
- keep "library" untraslated, but fixing the inflections
- decide on a translation: "biblioteca", "libreria", "file", "base di
dati di riferimenti bibliografici", other?
Some help from other translators would be much appreciated.

I checked today the German translations, and there "library" is still translated "Datenbank". In Spanish still "base de datos". In French "base" was changed to "fichier" (=file), not to "bibliothèque". |
In French, "bibliothèque" would not carry the meaning of a list of references ("Bibliothèque" is about the actual books on the shelf). Historically, "Fichier" was the box where the paperrecords were stored (one sheet per book). It happens that now we use "Fichier" for "computer file" too. |
"Database" can be translated into Italian as "banca dati" ("data bank") or "archivio" ("archive"). I prefer the second one, since the first sounds a bit bureaucratic. |
Thanks to @frithnanth for fixing and updating the Italian translation. (BTW, the Italian word "libreria" also means "bookshop"). |
@JabRef/translators Could you please check your translations whether "library" is correctly translated? |
Actually, the word "libreria" in Italian means both "bookshop" and
"bookshelf".

Following the discussion of #1988, we decided to replace "Database" by "Library". This also has huge impact on the code (BibDatabase vs. BibLibrary)
