Quote q vs Said said

Lisa Cerrato edited this page Nov 4, 2016 · 1 revision

In the process of conversion, we have found that <q> doesn't fully capture the direct and indirect speech found in many editions.

Current practice is divided with old <q> tags of <q type="spoken"> versus <said direct="[true|false]">.

The latter allows for nested speech, where the speaker is quoting another speaker, and so on, whereas <q> does not.

An effort has also been made to @type the old <q> tags where appropriate, as many of the tags actually represent attributes such as @soCalled and @emph.

Neither should be confused with <quote> which is used for citations from another source, such as Xenophon quoting Homer.
