Meeting 17/08/2018
Minutes of the meeting with Prof. Robert Schlögl (referred to as RS below):
We have presented our ideas to RS using presentation slides and handed out the dossier collection to him.
TL;DR: RS LOVED the concept, and even suggested some grander ideas that expand on our version. He will present our proposal to the Kollegium right away, in order to get us the permission to officially get started on this. His idea is to hold around 8 events over two years, with the first one in Feb. 2019.
Minutes:
- RS prefers to split up all of the events into at least two
- EXCEPTION: QC and breakthrough events - here, he likes the idea of inviting all of the (in the presentation) proposed speakers for a podium discussion
DETAILS about that:
For Machine learning, climate, mobility:
Make 2 events out of each of these (so in total 6 events):
-first event/talk will be pedagocical intro into the subject (his main point was that an educated discussion would be better than just merging two opposing speakers who can't give an in depth talk about their view due to limted time)
- second event could then feature two opposing speakers
- He also mentioned the possibility to make one event with two speakers, where one gives an introduction and the other one then talks about the controversial views...
- For the mobility event he suggested Prof. Knie from TU Berlin as a speaker since he will be controversial
For QC, breakthroughs:
RS suggestion: Invite all speakers and then do
"impulse lecture": 2 "impulses", i.e. 10 min talks, from 2 speakers and then podium discussion afterwards
MEDIA COVERAGE
- RS likes idea of social media coverage ( twitter, upload event recording on youtube) + invitation of science journalists
- Multiple, updated posters (1 on the upcoming event, 1 as a teaser)
STRUCTURE OF THE WHOLE COLLOQUIUM:
- 8Talks spread over two years (the kollegium of course has to agree on that, but RS really likes the idea and will advertise it)
- 4 events per year, every quarter one event (about 1 to 1.5 hour per event (excluding reception afterwards))
ORGANIZATION
- RS says that Harnack-Haus will be sufficient (so no Henry Ford Bau)
- RS will assign some person that will help us with these things (like contacting speakers etc etc)
- RS emphasized that we need to organize the WHOLE colloquium at ONCE, so that the general idea is really fixed. This way it is more attractive to the audience and also the (possible) speakers since they can see that they are part of a bigger picture (and that this colloquium is
just really interesting, etc.). Posters to advertise the upcoming event, along with a roadmap for the upcoming ones (including a list of confirmed speakers - at least two-third of the invited speakers).
- Is really lke a conference spread over 2 years
- START: next year, say february.
- We have to start organizing (for instance inviting) immediately after RS gets the ok from the kollegium
- Need to check the available dates in the Harnack Haus, reserve TWO dates for EACH event
- (not supersure about what he meant here) but the other speakers should maybe also see who is invited (will be or is already?)
- we have to develop a logo for the colloquium series
BUDGET
Money no problem He mentioned 50 000 euros flight business class, overnight stay, hotel etc contained Catering no problem
FURTHER COMMENTS
- breaks between talks should never be only 5 or 15 min long. His experience is that people will get back late (i.e. at least 25 min break). He prefers, in case of 2 speakers, that we do not have breaks at all, since otherwise the audience will loose focus and the first speaker will be forgotten.
- from experience, he also prefers no common Q&A for two speakers towards the end, as only the second speaker will attract questions and the first one will be neglected.
- he also mentioned that having speakers from industry will be very informative but they will probably not be controversial. People who are more "free" so to say would be better.
Important note: He made it clear that he does not want to enforce something on us, these things are our ideas which we lengthly discussed.
He will present them to the Kollegium and get back to us as soon as possible.
Things to ponder upon:
1. Organization:
a. How to manage succession - considering some of us will leave midway through this two year project, etc.
b. Order of events and who is responsible for what
Comments (?): 1.

Working Title/Series Title/Abstract
Please edit this, or leave a note. I will use whatever is in this by the end of the week on the beginning of our compiled dossiers.
Fritz Sessions – Both Eyes Forward The Fritz Haber Institute looks ahead
Our generation will have to cope with a radically changing world. Climate change is real, and its effects are starting to be felt today. The machine intelligence genie is out of its bottle. Even democracy and capitalism itself seem on the verge of crisis. The clock cannot be turned back — the only way out is through.
In a year-long series of events, the Fritz Haber Institute aims to explore the challenges that lie ahead with a series of in-depth lectures, intended for a science-literate audience that is not satisfied with easily digested headlines. An audience that wants an answer to two questions: What’s next — and what can I do about it?
A Space For Notes Marcel: I edited this a bit compared the OG version below; not sure about starting with "Our generation" now. Marcel: (I also realised that I'm basically ripping off the accelerationists http://criticallegalthinking.com/2013/05/14/accelerate-manifesto-for-an-accelerationist-politics/): "1. At the beginning of the second decade of the Twenty-First Century, global civilization faces a new breed of cataclysm. These coming apocalypses ridicule the norms and organisational structures of the politics which were forged in the birth of the nation-state, the rise of capitalism, and a Twentieth Century of unprecedented wars."
13/06/2018 Chair: Florian wants to be quick
Update: Florian was fast
Tasks Everyone sends their final proposal to Marcel by EOW Marcel assembles into one document Lorenz sets appointment with Schloegl Everyone looks at the concept in the pad and thinks about it at least 30min Marcel tries to ascertain who is actually still organising this Chris (?) sends the mobility dossier asap
Minutes Three goals: Discuss and finalise dossiers Schloegl Meeting Plan Overall topic Feedback QC is "not coherent" from start to finish Remove backup plan ML needs to finish technical speaker list Climate might want to rewrite the abstract into sentences (and bring into roughly standard format) E-Mail ppl with typographical changes etc. We will send the FINAL dossiers to Marcel for formatting, who will forward them to Lorenz There should be some introduction to explain what the overall idea is, or at least not send 4 unrelated documents without context ;) Make contact (Lorenz? Freddy?) with Schloegl asap Who will go to the meeting? One person (at least) per group Roughly 4/5 ppl Dossers should be sent to S some days before the meeting, so they should be finished soon (end of week would be best!) Breakthrouhgs dossier abstract might be a bit unclear Concept dicussion (see below) We should probably mention gender parity as goal in the meeting Working titles: Fritz Sessions -- Both Eyes Forward
Concept Suggestion: "Both Eyes Forward"
The FHI looks ahead
The world is changing, and we can’t go back. Our generation will have to cope with a radically changing world. Climate change is real, and its effects are starting to be felt today. The machine intelligence genie is out of its bottle. Even democracy and capitalism itself seem on the verge of crisis.
The clock cannot be turned back — the only way out is through. An audience that wants an answer to two questions: What’s next — and what can I do about it?
Feedback/Discussion Should also include chances, maybe? The title is not great, but maybe good enough as working title? Some alternative suggestions "Our Future" Fritz Sessions "The Future of Our Climate" is a good title "Everything needs to change so everything can stay the same" ... i.e. to maintain the current standard of life we have to change a lot General discussion Is the current status really worth being maintained? Seems to really require a lot of explanation ;)
Session 24/05/2018 Chair: Chris
Minutes Discussion/introduction of Quantum Computing proposal Florian feeds his baby bird successfully Everyone largely agrees that the format should be mostly standard, for recognition Lorenz raises valid concerns that the name is a bit boring, so we should try to come up with a better overall concept and title What is the connection between all the talks? Things that are relevant to our generation, but probably not the directors FHI Outlook Sessions The Fritz Sessions Frissions Fritz Cola Sponsorship! The continued existence of the Paradigms group is under question http://www.catalini.com/economics-of-science/ Christian Catalini, Theodore T. Miller Career Development Professor at MIT, Associate Professor of Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management Marcel suggests the above, alongside something about publishing, might be good for a second series of talks about the business of science, or the way science is done Marcel also shares some suggestions on the mechanics How much can we pay the speakers? Dossiers should have take-home messages Breakthrouhgs dossier abstract might be a bit unclear
Concept
Tasks Yuanyuan: Find out how much the Nobel Prize winner got paid, if any Everyone finish their dossiers, for real! Max: Find out if the Paradigm group still exists Deadline for dossiers: 31st, midnight! Everyone: Think about a good name/connecting concept
Discussions
Quantum Computing: Three companies: IBM, Station Q, D-Wave Two speakers, with discussion Either have someone optimistic and pessimistic or different approaches to QC Geordie Rose: D/Wave Might be good for confronation with the other speakers He's definitely smart and has things to say If he doesn't want to talk about QC any more, he can probably suggest someone from D-Wave Jerry Chow Younger PhD at Yale? Same group as Geordie basically Maybe pair with someone a bit more grounded and chill Krista Svore; head of quantum architecture and tings, PhD, worked with Preskill, di Vincenzo Everyone likes her Seth Lloyd dat hair tho wide ranging interests could be paired with someone practical not biased Backup option: Janwei Pan + Anton Zeilinger Pan works in Entanglement, Zeilinger also, also one is the other's PhD student Should make a nice pairing: someone theoritical and experimental Who can do the discussions? Meijer, Bretislav, Mallikarjun Tasks: Make a clear priority list of topics and speakers Which is the favourite concept?!
Session 16/05/2018
Chair: Marcel Goal: Review the remaining dossiers
Minutes
- Three dossiers to review: ML, QC, Climate
Discussions
Machine Learning Zeynep Tufekci Nothing major to complain Does she really talk about ML tho Cathy O'Neil Should focus on connections to research, what can be done Maybe think about the more researchy people...? Kate Crawford Ppl seem to like her Can she be more researchy? Recheck NIPS keynote Hod Lipson We should have someone give a techincal introduction to how these things actually work There should be a base of knowledge to base the 'dangers' discussion on Task: Can the speakers give an in-depth explanation? Alternatively, who can do so?
Climate All the speakers seem fine The speakers were all similar enough that inviting two of them is pointless, but if you find a policy person it would be amazing Tasks Find politicians that worked on the Paris agreement, and that we can get Did one of the candidates contribute to Paris in some way?

Session 09/05/2018
Chair: Florian Goal: Get closer to having finished proposals to give to Schloegl; give feedback on the proposals
Tasks Groups already reviewed got their tasks Rest please prepare 3 speakers with representative talks (for each role) (pick the starting time) Enjoy the long weekend! Someone please fix the sound system in the conference room Doodle for next meeting (next week)
Next time on "the colloqcommittee meets" We review the remaining groups Then, everyone revises/finalises the dossiers, then we vote
Minutes Brief discussions whether we're looking for one proposal or multiple; we should give a few Review + discussion of the proposals We found a cellphone!!
Discussions
Breakthroughs Standard colloquium format Should pick preferred 3 Helga Nowotny: We like her Latour: Can you find a better video? This one is confusing, but he seems like he could be fun. Kitcher: Meh
Tasks: Please find talks for the remaining speakers Find a better talk for Latour Come back with at least 3 candidates with videos (please pre-screen)
Future Mobility Two different perpsectives on the topic Florian: If you want a discussion, you need to plan it more in details, it's difficult to do it well Who is the audience? People at the FHI don't know that much about mobility, but we might attract more interested people The point of the discussion is to have dialogue between the speakers AND the audience Some question on whether this could be too large in scope, especially for us as beginners (wranngling two speakers, plus moderator, plus trying to get the audience to do things) Suggestions: Make a joint Q&A at the end of the two talks instead of a full-blown panel discussion: Both speakers answer audience questions, moderated by someone on stage that calls out questions. Two speakers is a high risk, especially that they fit together but the group says it should work out with some of the speakers
Tasks: Find concrete proposals for moderators Think about how to make the discussion good Think about how to organise the invitations Think about backup plan if it goes
Session 25/04/2018
Outcomes
From now on, this document will serve as central storage for meeting minutes and current notes Each session will have a chair and be capped at 90 minutes The chair is the person who decides to sit in the important chair We have formed 5 sub groups to handle individual events (see the group list above) Everyone is invited to give ideas/feedback to these groups Please take a minute to review whether you are happy with the group you are in We decided on an overall format for the events (see below) We saw presentations on each topic Each group will prepare a dossier to present to Robert Schlögl A template will be provided by marcel They should be sent around BEFORE the next meeting, so by May 8th at the latest See tasks for who is responsible At the next meeting, tentatively scheduled for May 9th, we will give feedback on the dossiers, so please read them before
Format We decided on a rough format for the events, details to be dicussed by the groups for the individual events
- Will be evening sessions, i.e. after 4pm
- Two options: Big talk with intro, or multiple speakers plus discussion. Pick between them depending on topic.
- Duration: less than 3 hours
- People should be okay to leave around 8 (reception afterwards is fine), it's good to have some spread to allow different people to come
- Gender Equality (roughly)
Tasks Lorenz: Ask Robert Schlögl if we can actually buy food for everyone! Marcel: Prepares template for the dossiers Dossiers until next meeting, following people are responsible for getting it done somehow (see group list, underlined) Note: They can just find someone else to do it But do it this time please Leonard: Organise rooms for next meeting, 11am on 9th May 2018 Marcel: Format the minutes nicely and send an email
Minutes Chair of the session: M A R C E L in the seat of power Goal of the session: - Decide on format for the sessions (roughly, so we can invite speakers) -> done, see below - Decide on the 4 topics we want to pursue -> it's not that many, will do all
- We are now doing all the minutes in one central Piratenpad, the URL of which is https://piratenpad.de/p/FHI_Colloq
- Florian is in favour of having diversity in the format, since it might be difficult to get high profile speakers on the same date, so we can have
- Plan A: Big speaker
- Plan B: Two "small" speakers
- Plan C: poster session (that's not a standalone event)
- He suggests forming 4 groups to handle on session, doesn't have to be the same format for each
- Leonard agrees, forming some groups to handle the sessions semi-independently
- More discussion; we should decide on a rough overall framework
- It turns out that half the groups didn't prepare anything. The half that didn't do anything defends itself, the other half is confused why the other didn't do anything.
- So now: We look at what we have, decide on a rough format and four topics to focus on, then put into groups and give them tasks
Presentation 1: Mobility Evening event (6pm) Two overall topic ideas: X and Y Two speakers e.g. 1 speaker from industry, 1 from politics, or 1 scientist each one gives a talk (30-45 minutes w/ break) Panel discussion Possible speakers: Jonas Eliasson (Stockholm transportation) TEAM MOBILITY PLEASE ADD SPEAKERS
Comments Max: How about railways? Bombardier is in Berlin Marcel: How about bike-sharing? Natalia: How about a poster session with (small) companies? Florian: We want someone visionary; how much better could we do here? Car companies will just be like "uhh cars are great" Comment: How about some Hyperloop guys?
Presentation 2: Quantum Computing Evening event or day event? Dialectic Evening: Is it actually feasible, or is it not? List of speakers: Michael Nielsen (wrote standard text book on quantum computing ) Geordie Rose, one of the founders of D-Wave (built first commercial QC) In favour of feasible QC: Chetan Nayak / Matthias Troyer / Krysta Svore (see People: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/people/) Against the possibility of feasible QC: Gil Kalai (https://www.quantamagazine.org/gil-kalais-argument-against-quantum-computers-20180207/)
Presentation 3: Paradigm Shifts Format: Start at 5; main speaker and FHI director Intro by a director Speaker 1: How do breakthroughs appear? For instance QM? Aperitif Speakers: Helga Nowotny (sociologoist, lawyer, innovations, ERC) Bruno Latour (philosopher) Susannah Scott (critic of current state of publication industry) Philip Kitcher (student of Thomas Kuhn ("The Structure of Scientic Revolutions")) Introduction by FHI Scientific Director (20 min. talk an an FHI breakthrough) maybe someone from the MPI for History of Science(?)
Comments Does it fit with the future? Can use the other MPI as source of speakers (maybe nice to have a connection with them) Moderate a discussion or something Do they have posters?
Presentation 4: Machine Learning Introductory talk by 'local' guy + bigger talk by some famous guy Speakers Zeynep Tufekci Cathy O'Neil http://www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpress/?p=8732 ? Cory Doctorow Michael Nielsen Shan Carter Format: Evening Session of two talks Pitch crazy ideas to the speakers
Comments Authors might be easier to get when Leipziger Buchmesser takes place?
Presentation 5: Climate https://piratenpad.de/p/Future_Climate Format 1 Discussions cards in the beginning Three speakers & a talk-master Podium discussion PhDs present possible building blocks for a sustainable future Format 2 One big speaker ... or maybe have a climate change critic also Speakers
Staatssekretär of the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie, Dr. Ulrich Nussbaum a speaker of the Verband der chemischen Industrie, Sebastian Kreth the scientific leader of the project “Global Energy” at the Institute for advanced sustainability studies, Sibylle Röhrkasten Dr. Alice Sakhel of the Agora-Energiewende, a think-tank Johan Rockström; climate impact research, planetary carrying capacity Some minister, why is Germany not doing more?
