---

Robert is a Research Software Engineer that previously completed his PhD at the University of Sheffield.
He specialises in GPU accelerated computing and complex system simulations, following his PhD's focus on improving the performance of spatial communication in GPU accelerated algorithms.
He specialises in performance optimisation and GPU parallelisation, following his PhD's focus on improving the performance of spatial communication in GPU accelerated algorithms.

He is a developer of the [FLAMEGPU](http://www.flamegpu.com/) software framework, facilitating wider access to complex systems modelling on GPUs.
As a developer of the [FLAMEGPU](http://www.flamegpu.com/) software framework, which facilitates wider access to complex systems modelling on GPUs, he has supported projects ranging from EU funded biological modelling to industrially funded transport modelling.

Previously he worked on the [PRIMAGE project](https://www.primageproject.eu/),
which proposed an open cloud-based platform to support decision making in the clinical management of two paediatric cancers.
In particular, working towards the development of a cell scale model of neuroblastoma to be scaled across multiple GPUs and distributed HPC resources.
Since the 2022/2023 academic year he has been the module leader for [COM4521/COM6521](https://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/intranet/teaching/public/modules/level4/com4521.html) that covers parallel programming with OpenMP and CUDA. He also reguarly supervises a small number of undergraduate projects within the school of computer science.

Currently he is working with [Fujitsu Research Europe](https://www.fujitsu.com/uk/about/local/corporate/subsidiaries/fle/) developing a GPU accelerated transport model.
He is also a strong advocate for making software performance best practices accessible to programmers at all skill-levels. First he developed the [Profling & Optimisation for Python short-course](/pando-python) which is reguarly [delivered to researchers at Sheffield](https://mydevelopment.csod.com/ui/lms-learning-details/app/event/fe34df6f-ab5f-49cf-b794-88aba03b3803). More recently he founded the ["Reasonable Performance Computing" Special Interest Group](https://sig-rpc.github.io/), with support from the [Society of Research Software Engineering](https://society-rse.org/), to more broadly gather and disseminate performance best practices at a national level. In 2025 he recieved an [Software Sustainability Institute fellowship](https://www.software.ac.uk/fellowship-programme/robert-chisholm) to support this work.

Since the 2022/2023 academic year he has been the module leader for [COM4521/COM6521](/training/com4521) that covers parallel programming with OpenMP and CUDA.
