With the beta release of the `react-compiler` [eslint plugin](https://www.npmjs.com/package/eslint-plugin-react-compiler), accessing a refs `.current` during render is marked as an error. This is also warned against in the [official docs](https://react.dev/reference/react/useRef) Instead, we can wrap this in a `useEffect` which is the recommended practice. I have also updated some of the language to avoid long sentences and removed the reference to the outdated docs.
