Session 13. Diverse comparative studies and the digital classicist work: Greek/grc, Portuguese/por and Brazilian Sign Language/bzs (LIBRAS)

Session outline

In this session, we are going to bring to the discussion and practice some of the digital resources of the platforms used in digital classicism applied to different studies that involve a comparison of texts and languages, including Greek, Portuguese and the Brazilian Sign Language (BLS). We are also going to discuss the features of the work of a digital classicist/humanist. These studies belong to a more extensive project developed at UNESP (São Paulo State University), Open Projects in Digital Classics in the School of Humanities and Sciences, Araraquara. The session will focus on the use of alignment and annotation tools to help on contrasting languages, analyzing linguistic-discursive categories, and comparing translation strategies. One of the studies departs from an analysis of the Ancient Greek middle voice and how its main semantic feature, the subject affectedness, can or cannot be found in Brazilian Sign Language (BLS) translation. The other study approaches the acting of the digital classicist, showing how to annotate linguistic-discursive data collected from oral interviews using the Partitur - EXMARaLDA.
