Currently, the learners' project is a simulation that involves biology. The learners have never been able to contribute to it in a substantial way. That it is about biology is setting our non-biology learners back.

I suggest to use a simpler project that requires no domain knowledge.

Agree? If yes, please make your suggestions. I suggest we vote and pick the one with most votes 👍

I Agreee,
I do think they want to have a project that is relevant for science though and it needs to be complex enough that it can show case the process. I was wondering if we should do something like a nonlinear least squares project it also makes simpler parts more inline with the project.

I think the research project should involve data analysis. I suggest to use this Harry Potter dataset to answer research questions as (1) how many characters are there? (2) What percentage of male/female is there, (3) etc.

My input:

  • Data should be there
  • Both input and output
  • thinking of userfriendlyness, e.g. GUI or good input prompt
  • use of external packages (e.g. pandas and matplotlib without going into details) to make deployment interesting

Looks like that two want to use data and do data analysis :-)

    - B: some learners may not feel it is relevant,
      pandas uses Titanic data
    - L: agree for simpler project and relevant to science and domain agnostic
    - B: let's agree on the features:
        - Data should be there: B, L, R
        - Both input and output: B, L, R
        - take other users into account: B, L, R
        - use of external packages: B, L, R

    - Lars will come up with a learners' project suggestion
      next time

I'd like to add!

  • Let them use algorithms in the project!
  • Could input data be more general? Not so the program is to much hard-coded for one exact input file
