I tried connecting several "community" servers (worked around the issue #3 by connecting with the connect command through the console).
Each and every time, if the server needs custom files, the game starts a download but it is stuck at 0%, indefinitelly/
I tried those same custom file URLs with wget and with a web browser and outside the game, those files download perfectly fine, so it's definitely a problem with the game itself.

Looking at network traffic, it doesn't even contact the fast DL server at all when downloading custom content like maps.

It works fine when downloading the MOTD though (also hosted on a fast DL server)

@fspoettel
Copy link

This also happens on OSX since the last big mac update. It gets stuck on 25% constantly and then disconnects. If the map is already downloaded, connecting works fine

@Spanguole

Author

I should note it DOES download maps from the workshop.
(I tried timedemo'ing a demo recording to benchmark the performance, and that demo used an older version of de_dust2. Upon loading the demo, It downloaded it the map file just fine.)

@CommanderAlchemy
Copy link

I cannot download maps or custom content it just its at 0% and nothing happens.
Only way to go around this is to set cl_downloadfilter "none"
then manually download and put all files needed to play in correct dirs.

I was able download from it as well.

I'm pretty sure the reason for that was because it was downloading directly from the server (or possibly the workshop) as opposed to downloading from a fast DL server like most servers use (which doesn't work).

@ericek111

It's not THAT bad. It was actually working really good, but going without another update to break it completely would be out of character.

Try installing linux-lowlatency kernel, it should help with the stutter.
To run native games using their Windows counterparts, use this: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/9culdk/xpost_downloadrun_windows_versions_using_proton/

Could any Valve developer comment on this bug? Do you need any information? Do you know about this issue? Can we do anything to help?
I don't get it, they are investing a lot of money to the Linux platform but they can't fix such a simple bug? Common, this is one of the most popular games on Steam. New people are switching to Linux from Windows thanks to Proton and what will they think about this? "Linux can't join community servers, Linux sucks, back to glorious Windows..."

Bump

By @ericek111

@Tele42 I described the issue 5 months ago and based on that I made a workaround in 20 minutes, it even hit the frontpage of /r/GlobalOffensive. This is as far from vague as we can get on this tracker. The problem has been there for at least 15 months and, considering all the comments, probably for much longer than that.

Hell, for all I care, "hire" me for free and I'll do the betatesting for you if it's that much of an issue.

Thanks, Valve!
So guys, we did it...

One other problem I've noticed now is that the net_maxfilesize CVAR is not present, yet a dedicated server (well, a listen server as well) refuses to send any files bigger than 16MB over the standard protocol, quoting that as being the net_maxfilesize value. I suppose that means that Valve decided to cap it at that, but I like running a server with custom maps for brief games with my friends and setting up FastDL for that just doesn't sound reasonable.
So, can you bring that option back, but say leave the default to 16MB on the client (as in, the client would refuse accepting files bigger than that)? So that you could still send bigger files in LAN (or otherwise negotiated with every player) environments without the headache of either setting up FastDL or manually copying the file on every machine? Thanks.
Also, not sure if the .bsp.bz2 files are not supposed to be sent over standard protocol, but the server seems to ignore them. Those could also help with the file size limit.
