Project Auto Eyes

Autononomous Vehicle to Human Communication

Eye Contact

Remember, if a pedestrian makes eye contact with you, they are ready to cross the street. Yield to the pedestrian.” --California Driver Handbook

No Eyes?

Self-driving vehicles don't have a human at the wheel so pedestrians need confirmation they are seen. Eye contact, head nods and hand waves need replacement.

Autos Need Eyes

Auto Eyes is a simple lighting system for one-way communication from the robot to pedestrians, cyclists and other mobile humans.

Open Source

Open source and open collaboration will provide a safe and consistent solution to society for the best adoption of autonomous vehicles.

Mission

To improve mobility safety and autonomous vehicle acceptance by creating standard protocols for autonomous vehicles to communicate with pedestrians, bicyclists and other personal mobility actors through open collaboration.

Project Scope

  • Requirements documenting the common scenarios and how an autonomous vehicle will use LEDs to communicate each scenario.
  • Reference implementation to demonstrate how the lights work in the physical world.

Audience

  • Autonomous vehicle manufacturers
  • Autonomous vehicle policy makers (Governments)
  • Autonomous vehicle safety advocates
  • Autonomous vehicle fleet operators
  • Autonomous vehicle enthusiasts
  • Mobility fleet operators
  • Mobility safety advocates
