What's in this pull request?
Similar to some of what's in #274, eases the Deferred 3 to 4 transition.
Testing
This will slightly affect test coverage numbers, but the added methods have no real code to them and can't be meaningfully tested.
API Changes
Technically, yes; additions to counteract removals in 4.0 - but they're all stubs to help the compiler.
