Previously, #6571 was squash-merged, breaking commit history on the develop branch. Repair it (as much as is feasible) by repeating the merge again.

This should not change the content of develop, just the commit history.

Note that this PR is slightly different from #6571, because I included 9ce45be, which was in the original release-2.5.2 branch, and so should be merged into develop.
