Origin is a set of toolkits that together provide a system for the issuance and management of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs).
Energy Attribute Certificates, or EACs, is an official document which guarantees that produced energy comes from a renewable source. There are different standards that regulate how data is stored and validated. In Europe, this document is called Guarantee of Origin (GO), in North America, it's called Renewable Energy Certificate (REC), and in parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America governing standard is International REC (I-REC). Standards do vary, but they all share the same core principles.
The main purpose of EACs is to act as an accounting vehicle to prove that consumed energy came from a renewable source. EACs are mostly used to address sustainability reports regarding Scope 2 emissions.
The Origin open source framework is used by companies and regulators around the world to build EAC tracking and trading systems. It leverages blockchain technology to enable full traceability and transparency. It offers a user and device registry with on- and off-chain storage capabilities to account for privacy requirements. It includes an issuer module that can issue EAC's upon request based on provided evidence. Origin also integrates into existing registries with established voluntary and/or compliance regulation and therefore offers fully regulatory compliant EAC issuing. Sellers can set a price and publish their certificates for sale using the marketplace modules. Buyers can browse certificates and filter by specific criteria that are important to them. They can also create demands that are automatically matched to certificates using the matcher module. Origin also facilitates long term agreements between buyers and sellers, where it does automatic verification and transfer based on defined criteria. Because of integration into regulatory compliant registries, certificates can be officially claimed and used in sustainability reporting.
