Minimum system requirements for developers?

I'm a new volunteer coder, but I'm having trouble setting up my development environment.

I think the problem is likely that I have an older computer, which can't run the latest version of Docker (I'm running Version 18.06.1-ce-mac73). So I'm trying to decide if this is a fixable problem, or if I just need to buy a new computer.

Is there a list anywhere of the minimum versions of the software necessary to get the development environment working? Or does anyone have experience installing the development environment on an older Mac (I'm running macOS Mojave, 10.14.6) who can tell me if it's doable or not?

I added OPENBLAS_NUM_THREADS=1418 to my .env.dev file, but it didn't make any difference.

That did make it act differently, and django exited with code 1 (instead of 130). But http://127.0.0.1:8000/ still isn't working.

I see, might this new issue might be related to resources available for docker? I remember I needed to increase memory on my docker desktop resources settings to have available at least 4GB or RAM and 2GB of Swap, as described in point 6 here

You could also try to increase CPUs if possible, hopefully this helps.

I did increase the RAM and Swap, as described in the Getting Started file. I didn't get a chance to try increasing the CPUs, because I found a different solution, below.

I got it (mostly) working! After some research, I discovered that the latest version of Docker that will run on macOS Mojave (10.14) is 4.11, and is available to download from here:
https://docs.docker.com/desktop/release-notes/
And after upgrading, all the errors I got before are gone. So the version of Docker does make a difference, but 4.11 is new enough to run the CL development environment.

Unfortunately, now I have a new problem. Both http://127.0.0.1:8000/ and http://127.0.0.1:8983/solr appear to work fine, but http://127.0.0.1:8000/admin gives me an error.

I think my old macOS is an unusual enough case that it's not worth cluttering up the main documentation with a work around. (Though I did find a separate bug in the documentation to post.) Hopefully if anyone has an old macOS in the future, they'll find this conversation to solve it. With that in mind, I also posted information below about which version of Docker to use with various versions of macOS (not just mine) and where to get them.

One last note for anyone who finds this thread in the future. Here are the latest versions of Docker that can be used with various versions of macOS. All the versions listed here support the Court Listener development environment.

macOS 10.14 and earlier — use Docker version 4.11.1 from https://docs.docker.com/desktop/release-notes/
macOS 10.15 — use Docker version 4.15.0 from https://docs.docker.com/desktop/release-notes/
macOS 11 and later — use the latest version of Docker from https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop/
