Stackexchange notify

A small python script that watches a StackExchange sub-site (optionally filtered by one tag) for new posts and displays them.

Starts with showing the posts from the last ~15mins

Currently it supports GTK (with lib-notify), MacOS (with pync) and output to the terminal.

usage: se_notify.py [-h] [-s SITE] [-t TAG] [-d DELAY]
                    [-n {pync,terminal,GTK}] [-i ICON]
                    [--start-time START_TIME] [--verbose]
                    [--max-questions MAX_QUESTIONS]

StackExchange notifications

optional arguments:
  -h, --help            show this help message and exit
  -s SITE, --site SITE  Sub-site to watch (default: CodeReview)
  -t TAG, --tag TAG     Tag to use as filter (default: None)
  -d DELAY, --delay DELAY
                        Delay (in seconds) between subsequent requests
                        (default: 30)
  -n {pync,terminal,GTK}, --notifier {pync,terminal,GTK}
                        Which notifier to use (default: GTK)
  -i ICON, --icon ICON  Icon (GTK only), either short name or absolute path
  --start-time START_TIME
                        How far back to start displaying in seconds (default:
                        1000)
  --verbose, -v         Turn on printing of new questions
  --max-questions MAX_QUESTIONS
                        Maximum number of questions to display at a time (default: 20)

Installation/Usage

$ git clone git@github.com:graipher/stackexchange_notify.git
$ cd stackexchange_notify
$ ./se_notify.py -t python &

If you want the script to use the logo for the watched Stackexchange (GTK only), you can place a file in the icons folder with the name of the corresponding site in lowercase. Otherwise the favicon of the site will be downloaded to the icons folder/

Requirements

Uses the StackExchange API Py-StackExchange

$ easy_install Py-StackExchange

Linux (GTK)

To allow displaying the notification

$ sudo apt install lib-notify lib-notify-dev

Mac OS

To allow displaying the notification

$ pip install pync
