Somewhere along the way they disappeared.

End tags for <html> and <body> may be omitted; it’s perfectly valid to do so. (For these elements you could even omit the start tags!)

Thanks, I'm new to HTML5 and didn't realize that, though I had searched the FAQ before posting the issue.

I guess that would mean that the bug is in the validation routines of my editor... Time for a new bug report...

This not specific to HTML5. In HTML 2 <html> and <body> were optional/implied too. :)

Indeed, as I have just now read - I am new to HTML in general ;)

It's probably also not a bug in my editor to highlight that - I've just added the closing tags to my own version of the 404 and I'll call it a day.
