Detailed manual for novice users

If you need a quick user manual, please read the Quick (15-minutes) manual. If you are already familiar with this system, i.e., you are an advanced user, please refer to the advanced users' manual.

NOTE: As soon as you face any issue, which might be a bug, i.e. a software defect, a feature which is not yet supported or any other problem that is caused due to the lack of clarity in the documentation, etc. please do not hesitate to report the issue by creating a new issue in the issue tracking system.

Introduction

As regards the EOP system architecture the most important top-level distinction is between the Linguistic Analysis Pipeline (LAP) and the Entailment Core. We separate these two parts in order to (a), on a conceptual level, ensure that the algorithms in the Entailment Core only rely on linguistic analyses in well-defined ways; and (b), on a practical level, make sure that the LAP and the Entailment Core can be run independently of one another (e.g.,to preprocess all data beforehand).

Since it has been shown that deciding entailment on the basis of unprocessed text is a very difficult endeavor, the Linguistic Analysis Pipeline (LAP) is essentially a series of annotation modules that provide linguistic annotation on various layers for the input. The Entailment Core then performs the actual entailment computation on the basis of the processed text.

The Entailment Core itself can be further decomposed into exactly one Entailment Decision Algorithm (EDA) and zero or more Components. An Entailment Decision Algorithm (EDA) is a special Component which computes an entailment decision for a given Text/Hypothesis pair. Trivially, each complete Entailment Core is an EDA. However, the goal of EXCITEMENT is exactly to identify functionality within Entailment Cores that can be re-used and, for example, combined with other EDAs. Examples of functionality that are strong candidates for Components are WordNet (on the knowledge side) and distance computations between text and hypothesis (on the algorithmic side). Both of these can be combined with EDAs of different natures, and should therefore be encapsulated in Components.

Supported Platforms

The following instructions are for Debian (6.0) and Ubuntu (13.04) GNU/Linux distributions on the Intel x86 - 64 bits / amd64 hardware architectures. However, it might be possible to adapt them to a number of other platforms as well. Especially, because the majority of the EOP code is written in Java and therefore it is platform-independent.

Hardware Requirements

The BIUTEE EDA is the most hardware resource intensive part of the EOP. Therefore, please consider its hardware requirements mentioned here.

Moreover, the Edit Distance EDA and the TIE (MaxEntClassification) EDA require standard PC hardware.

How to Download and Build the EOP

One type of the EOP distribution releases is for those users who are not aiming at building the EOP from its source code, but instead directly downloading the binary release. Another type is for those users who are going to build the EOP source code on their own system using Maven. Moreover, there's another kind of the EOP release, which is for those users who will only use the Maven artifacts of the EOP available via the FBK artifactory and in future, also from the Maven Central repository.

Download the EOP Binary Release (No build required)

If you do not want to build the EOP on your own system, you may easily download the binary release either by visiting the EOP website and downloading the latest Binary release (go to the Try it menu and choose Latest Release (Binaries)) or by using the following direct link. Then, unpack the tar.gz archive in a directory.

Because you have not downloaded the source code, but instead the binary release, you do not need Maven to build the EOP. Hence, you could jump to the next part.

Download the Maven Artifacts of the EOP

Alternatively, if you need the Maven artifacts of the EOP releases, you may download them from the FBK Maven repository:

Build the EOP Source Code

After downloading the source code of the latest EOP release from the EOP website, unpack the tar.gz archive in a directory (let's assume the path of that directory is $EOP), open a terminal (i.e. shell or command line) and change directory to $EOP using the cd command. Then, build the EOP using the Maven command below:

mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true package assembly:assembly

NOTE: Building the EOP with the above mentioned command skips the tests to reduce the build-time. However, if you would like to avoid this, please run the following command instead:

mvn package assembly:assembly

How to Add the Additional Resources

Please download the additional resources either by visiting the EOP website and downloading the EOP resources package (go to the Try it menu and choose EOP Resources) or by using the following direct link: http://hlt-services4.fbk.eu:8080/artifactory/repo/eu/excitementproject/eop-resources/1.0.2.tar/eop-resources-1.0.2.tar.gz

In the following sections, you will see where you should put this package in order to run the EOP properly.

The EOP Resources package includes the knowledge resources, the configuration files, the models, the datasets, the databases, etc. As a novice user, you should not care about them. You may easily download all of them in one package (called eop-resources) and follow the instructions below.

However, please note that from the license agreements point of view, the EOP has two kinds of knowledge resources: the GPL-v3-compatible ones and the GPL-v3-incompatible ones. The former is already included in that all-in-one package (called eop-resources), while the latter should be downloaded and installed (as instructed below) by the end user after reading and accepting the corresponding end-user license agreements. The GPL-v3-compatible Resources

The knowledge resources which have got GPL-v3-compatible license agreements are already included in the above mentioned EOP resources package. Therefore, the user should not do anything for them.

The GPL-v3-Incompatible Resources

There exist few knowledge resources which their license agreements do not allow us to distribute them in the EOP resources package. The end user must download and install them after reading and accepting their license agreements. In what follows, we instruct how to do this.

TextPro

TextPro (http://textpro.fbk.eu/) is a suite of modular Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools for analysis of Italian and English texts. The suite has been designed so as to integrate and reuse state of the art NLP components developed by researchers at FBK. The current version of the tool suite provides functions ranging from tokenization to chunking, parsing and Named Entity Recognition (NER). Distributions for Linux and Mac are available, for both research (it is free of charge) and commercial purposes (it is not free of charge). Details on how to install TextPro can be found in its distribution package.

NOTE: As a results of the dual license situation, when a request is sent to FBK (the copyright holder), the office which is dedicated to the licenses checks the request and evaluates it to see whether it is compatible with the use one wants to make of it. There is not any possibilities to bypass this mechanism. Therefore, from the time that you submit the license request via the FBK website, it might generally take a couple of business days until you receive the download link. Please be patient.

TreeTagger

Some Lexical linguistic pipelines (LAPs) are utilizing TreeTagger; notably German pipelines. Due to license issue, we cannot re-distribute TreeTagger binaries or models with EXCITEMENT open platform. Installing TreeTagger for EXCITEMENT is actually simple. Follow the instructions in TreeTagger Installation.

NOTE: If you are using the binary distribution release of the EOP (i.e. you are not using Maven for building the EOP) you would not be able to use the above mentioned simplified mechanism for installing Tree Tagger. In this case, you should either avoid using those configurations which need Tree Tagger or install it on own.

GermaNet

GermaNet is lexical semantic network for German language. It is quite similar to English WordNet, and can provide various important relations for textual inference in German. However, GermaNet is not a open resource. You have to get a license from University of Tuebingen. For academic institutes, this can be free. For other purposes, this is not free.

Once you got the license and GermaNet files, you can install them anywhere you like. The only information needed by EOP GermaNet access is the path to this installation. GermaNet is accessed from EOP by the class GermaNetWrapper. It needs the path to Germanet XML files (e.g. [path]/GN_V70_XML/). The path can be passed to the class via its constructor, or via a configuration. To see those examples, please check the test class "/eop/core/GermaNetWrapperMiniTest.java".

How to Run the EOP

In its current situation, the EOP supports 3 Entailment Decision Algorithms (EDAs):

The EOP needs an XML configuration file, which specifies the chosen EDA, the LAP, the settings, etc. A number of sample configuration files are provided in the config directory of the EOP source code and release as well as in the configuration-files directory of the eop-resources archive. As a novice user, you should not care about the config files. You may use a simple one like the one shown in the commands below. Once you learned the basics, please read the advanced users' manual (Supported Entailment Decision Algorithms (EDAs)) to obtain more information about the configuration files.

To run the EOP with the EDITS (Edit Distance) EDA and the TIE (MaxEntClassification) EDA, please follow the instructions below.

Run the EOP Using Java on the Command Line

If in the previous steps, you have downloaded the full source code of the EOP and have built it using Maven, then you should change directory (using the cd command) to the generated directory called target and unpack the created ZIP archive of the EOP binaries there. A new directory with the same name as the release name will be created there, which contains a number of JAR files. Moreover, put the unpacked eop-resources archive that you have downloaded in the previous section, in the target directory.

However, if you have downloaded the binary release of the EOP, you should just simply unpack that archive. Similarly, a new directory with the same name will be created there, which contains a number of JAR files. The easiest way to run the EOP is using its main class called Demo in the GUI package. You should run the Demo class of the EOP with a number of command-line options like below. Feel free to change the text and hypothesis to the ones you would like to have.

An XML file called result.xml is created, which contains the Entailment / Non-Entailment information.

You can choose to do:

  • training -- include the options -train (no argument) and -trainFile file, where file is a training file in RTE3 data format. The result of training is a file containing the model, stored under the name specified in the configuration file.
  • single pair testing -- include the options -test (no argument) and -text "your text between double quotes here" and -hypothesis "your hypothesis text between double quotes here" ;
  • file testing -- include the options -test (no argument) and -testFile file, where file is a test file in RTE3 data format;
  • combination of training and testing (either on a single pair or a file)
NOTE 1: If you choose to perform only testing, you must ensure that the model specified in the configuration file exists. Alternatively, if you do training, there should be no model with the same name as the one specified in the configuration file, the system will not rewrite existing models.

NOTE 2: For the system to find the model files, you should either:

  • run the command from the parent directory of eop-resources
  • replace the (currently relative) path of the model in the configuration file with an absolute path (according to your set-up)
Sample command for training & testing on a single pair:

Sample command for training & testing on a file:

An XML file called result.xml will be created, which contains the Entailment / Non-Entailment information and another XML file named report.xml is also created, which contains the evaluation information.

Run the EOP Using the Maven Exec Plugin

You can also call the application class with the help of Maven. This could be a proper option if you are expecting to modify and recompile the code in the future.

Exec plugin lets you call any class in the project (if it has Main), with all classpath properly set according to the POM by Maven. Once the project is built (e.g. by "mvn package" command) you can invoke Exec. The usage is like followings:

mvn -f [path]/pom.xml exec:java -Dexec.mainClass=[Main class name] -Dexec.args="[arguments to Main()]". 
  • JVM options: Note that "exec:java" uses the same JVM of Maven. That is, it does not invoke additional JVM, but runs within Maven's invocation of JVM. Thus, if you want to pass any JVM argument, you have to pass the argument to Maven, directly. This is done by setting environment variable MAVEN_OPTS (E.g. >export MAVEN_OPTS="-Xmx5G"). Check Maven download & setup hints from the official Maven site, about this MAVEN_OPTS variable and setting it in your OS/environment.
  • Working Dir: Working directory (user.dir) is set as current directory, and not POM directory. Thus, you can simply chdir to the target directory and invoke Maven exec:java there to set your own working dir.
As an example, the previous demo class example ("Hubble as instrument") can be called identically by the following command:
mvn -f [project path]/gui/pom.xml exec:java -Dexec.mainClass=eu.excitementproject.eop.gui.Demo -Dexec.args="-dir eop-resources/configuration-files/ -language EN -activatedEDA MaxEntClassificationEDA -resource AllLexRes -text \"Hubble is a telescope\" -hypothesis \"Hubble is an instrument\" -output ./" 
(Notice that the \" to escape quote mark within -Dargs).

The main difference of the two command-line invocation methods is that EXEC plugin does not export the project and its depending Jars to file system. Thus, EXEC method is more suited for calling/testing when you are working with Maven.
