'Not in host or MPT modules not found' error in XenGT #40

hello. I have a question about install XenGT.

I try to install XenGT ver 4.10(gvt_linux ver 4.14.15+).

So I succeeded in booting XenGT.

But I can't create virtual machine.
(/sys/kernel/vgt/control/create_vgt_instance failed create vgt instance. failed: errno=2)

As you can see, XenGT can't create 'create_vgt_instance'. also I can't found '/sys/kernel/vgt' folder.

And then, I've inserted "drm.debug=oxf" in grub to check this problem.

I found "Not in host or MPT modules not found" message in dmesg.

I think the kernel seems to fail to load the MPT module.

How can I fix it? Please help me.

My system is as follows.

CPU : Intel 7th i7 7700
Mainboard : Asus B250M-A(B250 Chipset)

syzbot found a way to trigger an infinitie loop by overflowing
@offset variable that has been forced to use u16 for some very
obscure reason in the past.

We probably want to look at NEXTHDR_FRAGMENT handling which looks
wrong, in a separate patch.

In net-next, we shall try to use skb_header_pointer() instead of
pskb_may_pull().

strlcpy() can't be safely used on a user-space provided string,
as it can try to read beyond the buffer's end, if the latter is
not NULL terminated.

I already followed all the steps of the guide. But, the same problem occurs.
I still see the message "Not in host or MPT modules not found" and "open /sys/kernel/vgt/control/create_vgt_instance failed".
I can't find any solutions... help me.

@ccod85 , are you make sure the CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT, CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT_XENGT are existed in your kernel config?

Yes, I did. "make menuconfig"
part of ".config" is as follow

CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT_KVMGT=m
CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT_XENGT=y

And I did turn on the CONFIG_VFIO_MDEV and CONFIG_VFIO_MDEV_DEVICE.
Anything I missed?

@TerrenceXu I fixed this problem. I changed kernel compile option.

CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT_XENGT=y -> m

And I updated the dependency and the initramfs file. So, domain 0 boot was successful. But I can't boot guest OS(Windows 7 64bit). It just stopped during boot. I found this error message in dmesg:

i915 0000:00:02.0: Direct firmware load for i915/gvt/vid_0x8086_did_0x1616_rid_0x09.golden_hw_state failed with error -2

So, I installed firmware from (https://github.com/wkennington/linux-firmware/tree/master/i915) that is related with Intel GVT in /lib/firmware/i915 directory. But it didn't work. And then, I tried to find vid_0x8086_did_0x1616_rid_0x09.golden_hw_state firmware. But I can't.

I don't know what to do anymore. I tried everything I could. But It is not worked..

And if with "vgt=0", can you boot up VM well?

@TerrenceXu When I install the operating system and boot it for the first time, it will boot normally. Even if "vgt = 1".(I can see standard vga graphics adapter in windows device manager. The problem is I can see just one display device.) However, when I install the intel hd graphic driver that is recommended in the guide document(Kabylake: 15.45.23.4860 Skylake: 15.45.23.4860 Broadwell: 15.40.37.4835), it stops during boot.

More information is as follow.

With xengt, you should only see one gpu device in device manager.
It seems your windows driver could be loaded successfully, which branch are you using ? and paste your host dmesg.

@xiongzha Oh really? The guide document explained that two devices will appear in windows device Manager(https://github.com/intel/gvt-linux/wiki/GVTg_Setup_Guide#422-windows-gfx-driver-support). So I believed that two devices in windows device manager should come up.

I used branches as below.

GVT-Kernel : gvt-stable-4.14
GVT-Qemu : stable-2.10.0
GVT-Xen : xengt-stable-4.10

He bisected to 84c6591 ("locking/atomics,
asm-generic/bitops/lock.h: Rewrite using atomic_fetch_*()")

This commit however only unmasked the real issue introduced by commit
4aef66c ("locking/atomic, arch/arc: Fix build") which missed the
retry-if-scond-failed branch in atomic_fetch_##op() macros.

The bisected commit started using atomic_fetch_##op() macros for building
the rest of atomics.

Increase kasan instrumented kernel stack size from 32k to 64k. Other
architectures seems to get away with just doubling kernel stack size under
kasan, but on s390 this appears to be not enough due to bigger frame size.
The particular pain point is kasan inlined checks (CONFIG_KASAN_INLINE

stub_probe() and stub_disconnect() call functions which could call
sleeping function in invalid context whil holding busid_lock.

Fix the problem by refining the lock holds to short critical sections
to change the busid_priv fields. This fix restructures the code to

Commit b5efec0 ("powerpc/32s: Move KUEP locking/unlocking in C")
removed the 'isync' instruction after adding/removing NX bit in user
segments. The reasoning behind this change was that when setting the
NX bit we don't mind it taking effect with delay as the kernel never
executes text from userspace, and when clearing the NX bit this is
to return to userspace and then the 'rfi' should synchronise the
context.

However, it looks like on book3s/32 having a hash page table, at least
on the G3 processor, we get an unexpected fault from userspace, then
this is followed by something wrong in the verification of MSR_PR
at end of another interrupt.

This is fixed by adding back the removed isync() following update
of NX bit in user segment registers. Only do it for cores with an
hash table, as 603 cores don't exhibit that problem and the two isync
increase ./null_syscall selftest by 6 cycles on an MPC 832x.
