Currently, metrics can only bind to HTTP listeners and serve insecurely. It would be good to provide the option to get metrics over TLS as well.

I believe this should be relatively simple to do by using tls.NewListener to wrap the existing listener produced by the metrics.NewListener. This could be done in several locations:

  • We could wrap it within metrics.NewListener, but that would mean changing the signature to accept a cert and key file names, this would be breaking
  • We could wrap it within serveMetrics, wouldn't require breaking changes, could be considered to be the wrong place to wrap it if for example, the listener is going to be shared with other things (eg Expose HTTP Endpoints listeners used for metrics #684)

Do we think this is worth implementing?
