Creating a new artifact

迎春心情 edited this page Jan 27, 2022 · 15 revisions

What constitutes a good artifact to include on the site?

This project is mostly concerned with the kinds of files that can be used to enhance the production process with music production software, some examples are:

  • Pre-sets: Pre-sets for software synths or effect processors
  • Sample libraries: Sounfont files, .sf2, .gig, .sfz, etc...
  • Configuration files, templates: Sample files that can be used to bootstrap projects using music production software. Graphical themes, beat patterns, sample configurations, plugin chains, loops, etc...

It's not a 'good artifact' to include on the website... so where should I put ?

This project does not aim to compete with other established platforms which work well on their own right. Look up these other projects if you want to share other kinds of files:

Registering a new artifact

Resources can be registered in the new artifact page in '/artifacts/new' and currently need to be approved by an admin before they appear on the index.

Guidelines

How to create a great artifact which will make your family and friends proud!

Description

Be descriptive in this section. What's inside? How's it used? Are there any caveats?

You can use Markdown syntax to pretty up this text and add links if you want. You can also link images, but if you prefer they can be included in the 'More Info' section.

License

  • Read more about open licenses here
  • Use the 'Extra License Text' field to include extra info to the users.
  • Edit the licenses wiki page or File an issue if you have a suggestion of another license to include on the list.

Warning: DO NOT CHOOSE A WRONG LICENSE OR IGNORE LICENSE FIELD IF YOUR ARTIFACT IS NOT ORIGINAL!

Mirrors

Include links to other places where the file can be downloaded, try to include a direct link to the file and preferably an HTTP download url (no proxies, no redirecting, no file sharing websites with waiting times). See this wiki page for tips on hosting mirrored files.

More Info

Link to the artifact's website, the author's page, images, videos or sounds that provide more information. Soundcloud, Youtube, Vimeo, mp3/wav/flac/ogg and image files will be expanded and show on the page.

Tags / Software Tags / File Format

The tag forms will auto-complete with pre-existing tags, try not to create new tags if a suitable one already exists.

  • Include keywords relating to the artifact as 'Tags'.
  • Include the name of applications with which this artifact can be used as 'Software Tags'
  • Include additional file formats in the 'File Format List' field, please note that the uploaded file's format will be automatically added.

Ownership and distribution

You don't necessarily need to be the author of a file to register it, but please be aware that:

  • You should include the correct author's name in the form
  • If the author hasn't specified a license it's 'Copyright' by default, you're free to ask the author if they'd like to use a better license like Creative Commons though.
  • If you want to upload the file, the original author should be OK with redistribution of his creation.
  • Be sure to include a link to the original author's site in the 'More info Urls' section
  • Pasting a link to download the files in the mirror section is usually ok but some authors don't want you to even link directly to the files, they want people to visit their site.
  • Images and sound files linked as 'More Info' will be hot linked and some authors may oppose to that. If you need a place to host these resources, get in touch with me.

Uploading files

Be patient when uploading big files, it may take some time. A better uploader with progress report is on the way (take note, I said that Sep 10, 2015 :)

If you'd like to add an artifact with a big file (> 50mb or something like that) you can get in touch directly so I can add it bypassing the web interface.

Integrations

If you are uploading some file compatible with a Musical Artifacts integration, for example Guitarix presets or Hydrogen drumkits, make sure to read the integration wiki page.
