For WWDC we should have Outdoors running on the iOS SDK that we are releasing. iOS vector wins, in order, look like this:

  1. Outdoors is just a better map, we we come out the door winning.
  2. Changing colors and fonts for Outdoors so that it's your map.
  3. Have the map change based on sensors, like change the colors based on how fast you are running.

@incanus @edenh on the subject of Outdoors, how hard will it be to start testing this on iOS native vector?

1 and 2 should just be a matter of manually porting the style from https://a.tiles.mapbox.com/v3/mapbox.942wae1o/page.html#11/37.8616/-122.4807 over to gl.

I think Outdoors will be a win, but it also targets a subset of iOS users -- outdoors and fitness apps. General styling is IMHO more useful. However if Outdoors mode is an easy win, then we can toggle between Streets/Outdoors (and maybe even Satellite if we can resolve simple issues like mapbox/mapbox-gl-native#157 and not worry about retina iPad (mapbox/mapbox-gl-native#114) and that's big.

If nothing else, showing both streets and outdoors shows the style customizability. By building a demo around outdoors, we get to show off how our new tech comes together with llmr, terrain, and possibly routing.
