Query legacy spaces federation API if the hierarchy API is unavailable. #10583

If the new hierarchy API does not exist on any of the given servers. This is a backwards compatibility hack since initially not all servers will support the new API.

We can also deem this as not necessary, but it seemed fairly easy and a nice-to-have. |

Also noticed a typo in this method's docstring: "Performs simple data validates ...".

Will this produce odd results on the client-side where one may believe they can access a room, but will find they are unable to?
Mostly a question out of curiosity, as I don't know any way that the situation could be improved (and this is a legacy API so meh).

It shouldn't, this is before any filtering is done on whether a room is accessible or not, it pretty much is just about changing API shapes from the old /spaces
endpoint to the new /hierarchy
. Part of that is that the /spaces
endpoint returned multiple layers deep (over federation) while the /hierarchy
one does not. So we throw away a bunch of data.
The overall algorithm is:
- Find the requested room (which is returned in
rooms
for/spaces
, but as a separate field for/hierarchy
) - Attach the children events to it (which is returned in a list including children for other rooms in
/spaces
and as part of theroom
object for/hierarchy
). - Get the summaries for any of those children room (which are returned as
rooms
for/spaces
, but those will include additional layers).

Aha, I see. Thanks for explaining it so clearly.

Does Synapse not return a 400, M_UNRECOGNIZED
for endpoints it fails to understand, rather than a 502?

The goal is only to run this if we were unable to fetch data from all destinations, not just if we were unable to fetch it from the first destination. (This is different than our fallback of v2 -> v1 for e.g. send_join
, which we do on a per-destination basis).

My questions have been answered, and I have no more.

Synapse 1.41.0 (2021-08-24) =========================== This release adds support for Debian 12 (Bookworm), but **removes support for Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla)**, which reached End of Life last month. Note that when using workers the `/_synapse/admin/v1/users/{userId}/media` must now be handled by media workers. See the [upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/latest/upgrade.html) for more information. Features -------- - Enable room capabilities ([MSC3244](matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals#3244)) by default and set room version 8 as the preferred room version when creating restricted rooms. ([\matrix-org#10571](matrix-org#10571)) Synapse 1.41.0rc1 (2021-08-18) ============================== Features -------- - Add `get_userinfo_by_id` method to ModuleApi. ([\matrix-org#9581](matrix-org#9581)) - Initial local support for [MSC3266](matrix-org#10394), Room Summary over the unstable `/rooms/{roomIdOrAlias}/summary` API. ([\matrix-org#10394](matrix-org#10394)) - Experimental support for [MSC3288](matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals#3288), sending `room_type` to the identity server for 3pid invites over the `/store-invite` API. ([\matrix-org#10435](matrix-org#10435)) - Add support for sending federation requests through a proxy. Contributed by @Bubu and @dklimpel. See the [upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/latest/upgrade.html) for more information. ([\matrix-org#10596](matrix-org#10596)). ([\matrix-org#10475](matrix-org#10475)) - Add support for "marker" events which makes historical events discoverable for servers that already have all of the scrollback history (part of [MSC2716](matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals#2716)). ([\matrix-org#10498](matrix-org#10498)) - Add a configuration setting for the time a `/sync` response is cached for. ([\matrix-org#10513](matrix-org#10513)) - The default logging handler for new installations is now `PeriodicallyFlushingMemoryHandler`, a buffered logging handler which periodically flushes itself. ([\matrix-org#10518](matrix-org#10518)) - Add support for new redaction rules for historical events specified in [MSC2716](matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals#2716). Adds a backwards compatibility path to the room hierarchy federation endpoint by using the
/spaces
endpoint and translating the results (and throwing some of it away). The reasoning for wanting this is that the new
/hierarchy
federation endpoint will not be available on all servers initially, but we want the C-S endpoint to work as expected. This should allow clients to adopt the new endpoint quickly.Builds on #10569.Part of #10495.
I did some manual testing of this, but I'm not really sure how to make automated tests for this (as I had to manually run two different versions of Synapse, one which knew of the
/hierarchy
endpoint and one which did not).
