Verify that when something goes wrong while building / starting the devcontainer the first dialog offers you to go back to the local folder and when the window opens the local folder the log with the build/start failure opens.

"Remote-Containers: Open Log File..." allows you to open past logfiles.

What else could be improved for developing the Dockerfile / configuring the devcontainer.json?

On how to use Remote-Containers for testing see https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-remote-containers/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#testing-remote-containers.
