The update thread is where most OpenAL sound processing is done. Pushing this work into a thread separates OpenAL from Source itself at runtime, as well as provides the secondary ability for sounds to be processed at times that they can’t be processed using Source’s internal audio libraries.

Features

  • Allows audio to be processed while the rest of the Source Engine is stalled/busy/not intended to be playing sound. This includes times like the loading screen and the main menu.
