More details

I'm right handed. I tend to type with my right hand's thumb while holding the phone with my right hand.

When reaching for the rightmost boxes in the panel, by thumb has to get very crooked, this is ok for something occasional, but really uncomfortable if frequently needed.

As it turns out, the option to change the layout such as the bar with options in it is on the right. An option I did not even consider using because, well I'm right handed. The only thing that got me to try that is desperately trying all options I could find before filling a bug report, just to make sure I did not miss it.

A simple fix in the config screen labels would make this much easier to find.

Happy to take suggestions on how to clarify this, but I'm not sure I have a better name for it off the tip of my tongue.

I'm not sure how to call that column, but I'd go for "config/meta/miscellaneous/control column position:" left/right .

It's caller the Control layer int he code, so I'd go for "control layer position": left/right.

That would be even more confusing when using the "all layers" view, though.

I just checked what this option does in the 2 panel mode, and that suddenly makes a lot more sense! But it's very confusing when using the 1 panel mode. So what about something like this:

  • mode: 2 panels / 1 panel with right controls / 1 panel with left controls.
  • handedness: right-handed / left handed (if 2 panel mode is selected, grayed out or invisible for 1 panel mode)

Alternatively:

  • mode: 1 panel / 2 panels
  • controls: left / right (if 1 panel mode is selected)
  • handedness: right-handed / left handed (if 2 panel mode is selected)

BTW, I think control on the right makes for a better default when using the 1 panel mode, as one's thumbs gets pretty crooked when reaching for the rightmost end of the screen. But the 2 panels mode obviously benefits from being right handed by default, as more people are right handed.

Hm, I don't love the idea of needing separate variants of this for every supported mode. We also don't really have the infra at the moment to change which options are visible depending on other config variables (that would also conflict with #134).

I was also at first confused and noticed that I need to run it in left handed mode if I am right handed. Just switching left and right handed would make it more intuitive for new users.
