esm: remove `globalPreload` hook (superseded by `initialize`) #49144

This PR removes the globalPreload module customization hook. It is no longer needed now that its functionality is provided by the register API paired with the initialize hook. You can see examples of refactoring from globalPreload to register / initialize in #49465 and in some of the updated tests in this PR.

Besides removing the hook itself, the test-esm-loader-hooks.mjs test describe('globalPreload' block and test-esm-loader-side-effect.mjs were removed. These were testing parts of globalPreload, like that its communications ports work, that we already have separate tests for covering the superseding equivalent in register / initialize; or they were testing things that we don’t need tests for outside of the globalPreload context, such that global variables declared in a preload script are accessible on the main thread. (The new API calls register from the main thread, and global variables can be declared there, and we don’t need a test that global variables declared on the main thread can be read on the main thread.)

This PR completes the loaders roadmap Milestone 2.

I think we should first work on converting the existing tests that use globalPreload to use initialize, and my guess is that we are going to realize many features of globalPreload are missing, so we would need to first work on implementing them.

We should also docs deprecate --loader

Mm. I'm on it 🙂 figuring out exactly what those preload tests are testing is rather muddy.

Yes, I think those other things should be a separate PR—which I'm happy to handle—to keep things atomic (eg if removing globalPreload needs to be reverted, that ideally would not also revert these other things).

Building on #49465, I’ve gotten all the tests to pass in this branch and removed debugging code. I think it’s ready for review.

I deleted test-esm-loader-side-effect.mjs because if you look at the loader fixture it used, the only hook exported was globalPreload, and the test was asserting that various global variables defined in the preload script were reflected on the main thread. I think a refactored version of this would just be testing that global variables declared on the main thread exist on the main thread, which doesn’t involve loaders and doesn’t feel like a test we need.

From an earlier version of this branch I restored the deleted hook-resolve-type test, refactored to use register and initialize. So the aforementioned test-esm-loader-side-effect is the only deleted test, along with the deleted describe('globalPreload' block in test-esm-loader-hooks.

Please don't remove the hook in v20. Testdouble's loader relies on this, and I would hate to tell everyone that they must upgrade the testdouble version if they want to work with the latest nodejs.

Also, I haven't yet tried the new initialize/register to see if it works as advertised and if I can use it instead of globalPreload. I'm sure I can, but I believe this should be tested in the "real world" before removing it.

initialize / register will be released with v20.6.0, hopefully any day now.

This PR might not go out in the immediately following release, but I don’t think we can exclude this from the entire v20 line; that would mean that the hooks never become stable in v20, and we can’t let the hooks stay experimental for years and years for the lifetime of v20. It’s important to the Node.js project generally to get the hooks stable as soon as possible, and we can’t do that while globalPreload is still around. Ideally we can go stable (or at least release candidate) with v21 next month. I know you’re well aware that globalPreload is an experimental API that can change or disappear at any time.
