In Google Analytics our tracking of people making requests is very noisy and full of irrelevant data (as I understand it). We don't do any tracking of a bunch of other things we want to see people doing, like:

  • making annotations
  • categorising requests
    • playing the game
    • not playing the game
  • reporting requests
  • following things
  • messaging people

If we set these up using goals or event tracking, we can see what's happening and the impact of our work more easily and clearly.

Started this by importing the settings kindly provided by mySoc a while back.

First thing, looks like they're using a funnel setting to clear out all the noise from people sharing the /new path, which is currently making our tracking of new requests useless. Here's some info on how this works from the docs:

The required first step applies only to the Funnel Visualization report. When you mark a first step as required, the Funnel Visualization report only includes goal conversions that pass through that required step. Other sessions are just dropped from the report.

Set up new goals with funnels for everything we listed above. Used event tracking for the follow button clicks, had to revert it, fix and and redeploy 22b53ea

This is all deployed now, I need to check back in a few days the it's reporting how it should. Here's what our goals look like in GA:
