It is recommended to use the latest [SBS Pali Dictionary](https://sasanarakkha.github.io/study-tools/dict/sbs-pali-dictionary.html). All exercises and words used in the course are specifically labelled in the dictionary as such, making it clear which particular meaning of words (if there are multiple) is intended in specific examples in the course. And there are many useful links leading directly to grammatical analysis.

# **Pātikokkha Word By Word class at SBS**

**UNDER DEVELOPMENT**

This document is currently being edited. Please provide corrections or suggestions through the [feedback form](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Z8Jjt0-E0HNX7ygABIzAcrChG23M3IOyoZGQ-EDRzXY/) or by commenting directly in the Google document. We appreciate all ideas and feedback.

This material is for free distribution only.

Originally created by Ven. Bodhirasa, this document has been updated and enhanced by the [Sāsanārakkha Buddhist Sanctuary](http://sasanarakkha.org/) Pāli Development panel under the guidance of Ven. Devamitta.

It includes the following sources:

- Analysis of the Bhikkhupātimokkha available in the [Google Sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rS-IlX4DvKmnBO58KON37eVnOZqwfkG-ot-zIjCuzH4/).

- If you are using a mobile device, there is an [HTML version](https://devamitta.github.io/patimokkha_dict/Bhikkhu_Patimokkha/main.html) of the same analysis available.

# Exercises

For upcoming classes, you may practice analyzing the pātikokkha rules using the second sheet in the Google Sheet mentioned above. Please make a copy of this document rather than editing the original.

To begin, follow these steps:

- Copy the relevant rows from the second sheet.

- Open a new spreadsheet (it will be saved to your Google Drive automatically if you’re logged into your Google Account).

- Paste the copied text as unformatted (**Ctrl + Shift + V**), as copying directly from a list with formulas may result in errors.

- Make sure to remove the English translation of the sentences, as it may sometimes be present.

- Once you have pasted the text, you can complete the exercises here, or you may choose to print or save it as a PDF as preferred.

- Repeat this process for each week’s exercises. Consider pasting each week's content into a new tab within your document so it stays organized in one file.

Please avoid copying everything at once, as the materials are undergoing detailed, gradual revisions and may change significantly.

# Anki decks

To support vocabulary improvement, there are two Anki decks available. Please update them after each class:

- [Pātimokkha Word by Word](https://sasanarakkha.github.io/study-tools/anki-decks/patimokkha-word-by-word.html)

- [Bhikkhu Vibhaṅga](https://sasanarakkha.github.io/study-tools/anki-decks/vibhanga.html)

# For those who are new

For those who need some basic Pali knowledge to benefit more from this class, the following materials are available:

- A list of abbreviations used in DPD and all SBS Pali study tools.

`/filesrv1/share1/Sharing between users/13 For Pāli class/Anki Decks/abbreviations.xlsx`

- Video guides on how to install Anki and set up GoldenDict on your Windows Server account.

`/filesrv1/share1/Sharing between users/13 For Pāli class/video/how-to`

- Compact grammar tables on the server for those who need to refresh basic English grammar knowledge.

`/filesrv1/share1/Sharing between users/13 For Pāli class/Extra Reading/English Grammatical Terms`

- An introduction to the basic parts of speech in Pali and their translation. Please read through the [Beginner Pali Course](https://sasanarakkha.github.io/study-tools/pali-class/pali-class.html), and, if desired, the [Intermediate Pali Course](https://sasanarakkha.github.io/study-tools/pali-class/pali-class-inter.html). You don’t have to complete all exercises—just review the main headings to get an overview.
