My name is Alex, I am the author and maintainer of Instaloader.

Within the last five years, I dedicated a lot of time and energy into developing this project. Since then, Instaloader has become the most-installed Python library for downloading media and accessing metadata from Instagram, and it is the tool of choice for many research projects, commercial products as well as personal use. Instaloader imitates a browser's behavior in accessing Instagram. Its functioning depends on the stability of an undocumented application interface that often changes without prior notice. We designed Instaloader with that in mind, for example, the error handling works in a way that backend changes only affect as little of the functionality as possible, and there are well-documented fallbacks for several points that are prone to failure. However, all these measures, while alleviating bugs, do not prevent bugs from occurring. They occur out of the sudden and have high priority, as the success of this project largely depends on its reliability.

As a result, maintaining Instaloader requires a huge and continuous effort that is difficult to estimate and goes far beyond the mere management of issues.
