I don't intend to merge this, I'm just leaving it here as notes to self. I was trying to do #626 and #519 in one go as it's all related, but the changes were too many and too confusing, so I'm probably going to try and do a series of incremental PRs, each of which will likely seem somewhat pointless in isolation
