The United States Geological Survey (USGS) provides a wide range of water data, including flows, reservoirs, lakes, and groundwater data. The USGS water data is accessible through various services, such as Instant Value Service, Daily Value Service, and Site Service. These services allow users to retrieve recent and historical values for streamflow and other time-series parameters, daily statistical data, and information about hydrologic sites.

USGS API services

  • use this service to retrieve information about the millions of hydrologic sites
  • Provides real-time water data.
  • Includes streamflow, water quality, and groundwater levels.
  • Data typically recorded at 15-60 minute intervals.
  • Useful for real-time monitoring and flood forecasting.
  • Do not use this for getting historical min and max flow! This only has mean flow
  • Offers daily summaries of water data.
  • Aggregates information on streamflow, water quality, etc., on a daily basis.
  • Essential for understanding daily water condition fluctuations and trends.
  • Contains long-term statistical summaries based on DV data.
  • Provides statistics such as mean, median, max, and min daily values.
  • Includes percentile flows for each day.
  • Valuable for hydrological analysis, resource management, and historical condition assessment.
