objects larger than 15 bit and return incorrect results.
(Github issue 2670)

* Cython no longer requires the source to be writable when copying its data
into a memory view slice.
Patch by Andrey Paramonov. (Github issue 2644)

* Line tracing of ``try``-statements generated invalid C code.
(Github issue 2274)

* When using the ``warn.undeclared`` directive, Cython's own code generated
warnings that are now fixed.
Patch by Nicolas Pauss. (Github issue 2685)

* Cython's memoryviews no longer require strides for setting the shape field
but only the ``PyBUF_ND`` flag to be set.
Patch by John Kirkham. (Github issue 2716)

* Some C compiler warnings about unused memoryview code were fixed.
Patch by Ho Cheuk Ting. (Github issue 2588)

* A C compiler warning about implicit signed/unsigned conversion was fixed.
(Github issue 2729)

* Assignments to C++ references returned by ``operator[]`` could fail to compile.
(Github issue 2671)

* The power operator and the support for NumPy math functions were fixed
in Pythran expressions.
Patch by Serge Guelton. (Github issues 2702, 2709)

* Signatures with memory view arguments now show the expected type
when embedded in docstrings.
Patch by Matthew Chan and Benjamin Weigel. (Github issue 2634)

* Some ``from ... cimport ...`` constructs were not correctly considered
when searching modified dependencies in ``cythonize()`` to decide
whether to recompile a module.
Patch by Kryštof Pilnáček. (Github issue 2638)

* A struct field type in the ``cpython.array`` declarations was corrected.
Patch by John Kirkham. (Github issue 2712)

0.29

=================

Features added
--------------

* PEP-489 multi-phase module initialisation has been enabled again. Module
reloads in other subinterpreters raise an exception to prevent corruption
of the static module state.

* A set of ``mypy`` compatible PEP-484 declarations were added for Cython's C data
types to integrate with static analysers in typed Python code. They are available
in the ``Cython/Shadow.pyi`` module and describe the types in the special ``cython``
module that can be used for typing in Python code.
Original patch by Julian Gethmann. (Github issue 1965)

* Memoryviews are supported in PEP-484/526 style type declarations.
(Github issue 2529)

* ``cython.nogil`` is supported as a C-function decorator in Python code.
(Github issue 2557)

* Raising exceptions from nogil code will automatically acquire the GIL, instead
of requiring an explicit ``with gil`` block.

* C++ functions can now be declared as potentially raising both C++ and Python
exceptions, so that Cython can handle both correctly.
(Github issue 2615)

* ``cython.inline()`` supports a direct ``language_level`` keyword argument that
was previously only available via a directive.

* A new language level name ``3str`` was added that mostly corresponds to language
level 3, but keeps unprefixed string literals as type 'str' in both Py2 and Py3,
and the builtin 'str' type unchanged. This will become the default in the next
Cython release and is meant to help user code a) transition more easily to this
new default and b) migrate to Python 3 source code semantics without making support
for Python 2.x difficult.

* In CPython 3.6 and later, looking up globals in the module dict is almost
as fast as looking up C globals.
(Github issue 2313)

* For a Python subclass of an extension type, repeated method calls to non-overridden
cpdef methods can avoid the attribute lookup in Py3.6+, which makes them 4x faster.
(Github issue 2313)

* (In-)equality comparisons of objects to integer literals are faster.
(Github issue 2188)

* Some internal and 1-argument method calls are faster.

* Modules that cimport many external extension types from other Cython modules
execute less import requests during module initialisation.

* Constant tuples and slices are deduplicated and only created once per module.
(Github issue 2292)

* The coverage plugin considers more C file extensions such as ``.cc`` and ``.cxx``.
(Github issue 2266)

* The ``cythonize`` command accepts compile time variable values (as set by ``DEF``)
through the new ``-E`` option.
Patch by Jerome Kieffer. (Github issue 2315)

* ``pyximport`` can import from namespace packages.
Patch by Prakhar Goel. (Github issue 2294)

* Some missing numpy and CPython C-API declarations were added.
Patch by John Kirkham. (Github issues 2523, 2520, 2537)

* Declarations for the ``pylifecycle`` C-API functions were added in a new .pxd file
``cpython.pylifecycle``.

* The Pythran support was updated to work with the latest Pythran 0.8.7.
Original patch by Adrien Guinet. (Github issue 2600)

* ``%a`` is included in the string formatting types that are optimised into f-strings.
In this case, it is also automatically mapped to ``%r`` in Python 2.x.

* New C macro ``CYTHON_HEX_VERSION`` to access Cython's version in the same style as
``PY_HEX_VERSION``.

* Constants in ``libc.math`` are now declared as ``const`` to simplify their handling.

* An additional ``check_size`` clause was added to the ``ctypedef class`` name
specification to allow suppressing warnings when importing modules with
backwards-compatible ``PyTypeObject`` size changes.
Patch by Matti Picus. (Github issue 2627)

Bugs fixed
----------

* The exception handling in generators and coroutines under CPython 3.7 was adapted
to the newly introduced exception stack. Users of Cython 0.28 who want to support
Python 3.7 are encouraged to upgrade to 0.29 to avoid potentially incorrect error
reporting and tracebacks. (Github issue 1958)

* Crash when importing a module under Stackless Python that was built for CPython.
Patch by Anselm Kruis. (Github issue 2534)

* 2-value slicing of typed sequences failed if the start or stop index was None.
Patch by Christian Gibson. (Github issue 2508)

* Multiplied string literals lost their factor when they are part of another
constant expression (e.g. 'x' * 10 + 'y' => 'xy').

* String formatting with the '%' operator didn't call the special ``__rmod__()``
method if the right side is a string subclass that implements it.
(Python issue 28598)

* The directive ``language_level=3`` did not apply to the first token in the
source file.  (Github issue 2230)

* Overriding cpdef methods did not work in Python subclasses with slots.
Note that this can have a performance impact on calls from Cython code.
(Github issue 1771)

* Fix declarations of builtin or C types using strings in pure python mode.
(Github issue 2046)

* Generator expressions and lambdas failed to compile in ``cfunc`` functions.
(Github issue 459)

* Global names with ``const`` types were not excluded from star-import assignments
which could lead to invalid C code.
(Github issue 2621)

* Several internal function signatures were fixed that lead to warnings in gcc-8.
(Github issue 2363)

* The numpy helper functions ``set_array_base()`` and ``get_array_base()``
were adapted to the current numpy C-API recommendations.
Patch by Matti Picus. (Github issue 2528)

* Some NumPy related code was updated to avoid deprecated API usage.
Original patch by jbrockmendel. (Github issue 2559)

* Several C++ STL declarations were extended and corrected.
Patch by Valentin Valls. (Github issue 2207)

* C lines of the module init function were unconditionally not reported in
exception stack traces.
Patch by Jeroen Demeyer. (Github issue 2492)

* When PEP-489 support is enabled, reloading the module overwrote any static
module state. It now raises an exception instead, given that reloading is
not actually supported.

* Object-returning, C++ exception throwing functions were not checking that
the return value was non-null.
Original patch by Matt Wozniski (Github Issue 2603)

* The source file encoding detection could get confused if the
``c_string_encoding`` directive appeared within the first two lines.
(Github issue 2632)

* Cython generated modules no longer emit a warning during import when the
size of the NumPy array type is larger than what was found at compile time.
Instead, this is assumed to be a backwards compatible change on NumPy side.

Other changes
-------------

* Cython now emits a warning when no ``language_level`` (2, 3 or '3str') is set
explicitly, neither as a ``cythonize()`` option nor as a compiler directive.
This is meant to prepare the transition of the default language level from
currently Py2 to Py3, since that is what most new users will expect these days.
The future default will, however, not enforce unicode literals, because this
has proven a major obstacle in the support for both Python 2.x and 3.x. The
next major release is intended to make this change, so that it will parse all
code that does not request a specific language level as Python 3 code, but with
``str`` literals. The language level 2 will continue to be supported for an
indefinite time.

* The documentation was restructured, cleaned up and examples are now tested.
The NumPy tutorial was also rewritten to simplify the running example.
Contributed by Gabriel de Marmiesse. (Github issue 2245)

* Cython compiles less of its own modules at build time to reduce the installed
package size to about half of its previous size. This makes the compiler
slightly slower, by about 5-7%.

0.28.6

objects larger than 15 bit and return incorrect results.

Update pylint from 2.1.1 to 2.2.2.

Changelog

2.2.2

===========================

Release date: 2018-11-28

* Change the ``logging-format-style`` to use name identifier instead of their
corresponding Python identifiers

This is to prevent users having to think about escaping the default value for
``logging-format-style`` in the generated config file. Also our config parsing
utilities don't quite support escaped values when it comes to ``choices`` detection,
so this would have needed various hacks around that.

Closes 2614

2.2.1

===========================

Release date: 2018-11-27

* Fix a crash caused by `implicit-str-concat-in-sequence` and multi-bytes characters.

Closes 2610

2.2

=========================

Release date: 2018-11-25

* Consider ``range()`` objects for ``undefined-loop-variable`` leaking from iteration.

  Close 2533

* ``deprecated-method`` can use the attribute name for identifying a deprecated method

  Previously we were using the fully qualified name, which we still do, but the fully
  qualified name for some ``unittest`` deprecated aliases leads to a generic
  deprecation function. Instead on relying on that, we now also rely on the attribute
  name, which should solve some false positives.

  Close 1653
  Close 1946

* Fix compatibility with changes to stdlib tokenizer.

* ``pylint`` is less eager to consume the whole line for pragmas

  Close 2485

* Obtain the correct number of CPUs for virtualized or containerized environments.

  Close 2519

* Change ``unbalanced-tuple-unpacking`` back to a warning.

  It used to be a warning until a couple of years ago, after it was promoted to
  an error. But the check might be suggesting the wrong thing in some cases,
  for instance when checking against ``sys.argv`` which cannot be known at static
  analysis time. Given it might rely on potential unknown data, it's best to
  have it as a warning.

  Close 2522

* Remove ``enumerate`` usage suggestion when defining ``__iter__`` (C0200)

  Close 2477

* Emit ``too-many-starred-assignment`` only when the number of Starred nodes is per assignment elements

  Close 2513

* `try-except-raise` checker now handles multilevel inheritance hirerachy for exceptions correctly.

  Close 2484

* Add a new check, ``simplifiable-if-expression`` for expressions like ``True if cond else False``.

  Close 2487

* ``too-few-public-methods`` is not reported for ``typing.NamedTuple``

  Close 2459

* too-few-public-methods`` is not reported for dataclasses created with options.

  Close 2488

* Remove wrong modules from 'bad-python3-import'.

  Close 2453

* The ``json`` reporter prints an empty list when no messages are emitted

  Close 2446

* Add a new check, ``duplicate-string-formatting-argument``

  This new check is emitted whenever a duplicate string formatting argument
  is found.

  Close 497

* ``assignment-from-no-return`` is not emitted for coroutines.

  Close 1715

* Report format string type mismatches.

* ``consider-using-ternary`` and ``simplified-boolean-expression`` no longer emit for sequence based checks

  Close 2473

* Handle ``AstroidSyntaxError`` when trying to import a module.

  Close 2313

* Allow ``__module__`` to be redefined at a class level. Close 2451

* ``pylint`` used to emit a ``unused-variable`` error if unused import was found in the function. Now instead of
  ``unused-variable``, ``unused-import`` is emitted.

  Close 2421

* Handle asyncio.coroutine when looking for ``not-an-iterable`` check.

  Close 996

* The ``locally-enabled`` check is gone.

  Close 2442

* Infer decorated methods when looking for method-hidden

  Close 2369

* Pick the latest value from the inferred values when looking for ``raising-non-exception``

  Close 2431

* Extend the TYPE_CHECKING guard to TYPE_CHECKING name as well, not just the attribute

  Close 2411

* Ignore import x.y.z as z cases for checker `useless-import-alias`.

  Close 2309

* Fix false positive ``undefined-variable`` and ``used-before-assignment`` with nonlocal keyword usage.

  Close 2049

* Stop ``protected-access`` exception for missing class attributes

* Don't emit `assignment-from-no-return` for decorated function nodes

  Close 2385

* `unnecessary-pass` is now also emitted when a function or class contains only docstring and pass statement.

   In Python, stubbed functions often have a body that contains just a single `pass` statement,
   indicating that the function doesn't do anything. However, a stubbed function can also have just a
   docstring, and function with a docstring and no body also does nothing.

   Close 2208

* ``duplicate-argument-name`` is emitted for more than one duplicate argument per function

   Close 1712

* Allow double indentation levels for more distinguishable indentations

  Close 741

* Consider tuples in exception handler for ``try-except-raise``.
  Close 2389

* Fix astroid.ClassDef check in checkers.utils.is_subclass_of

* Fix wildcard imports being ignored by the import checker

* Fix external/internal distinction being broken in the import graph

* Fix wildcard import check not skipping `__init__.py`

  Close 2430

* Add new option to logging checker, ``logging_format_style``

* Fix --ignore-imports to understand multi-line imports

  Close 1422
  Close 2019

* Add a new check 'implicit-str-concat-in-sequence' to spot string concatenation inside lists, sets & tuples.

* ``literal-comparison`` is now emitted for 0 and 1 literals.

- `4440 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4440>`_: Adjust the stack level of some internal pytest warnings.

4.0.0

=========================

Removals
--------

- `3737 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3737>`_: **RemovedInPytest4Warnings are now errors by default.**

Following our plan to remove deprecated features with as little disruption as
possible, all warnings of type ``RemovedInPytest4Warnings`` now generate errors
instead of warning messages.

**The affected features will be effectively removed in pytest 4.1**, so please consult the
`Deprecations and Removals <https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/deprecations.html>`__
section in the docs for directions on how to update existing code.

In the pytest ``4.0.X`` series, it is possible to change the errors back into warnings as a stop
gap measure by adding this to your ``pytest.ini`` file:

.. code-block:: ini

   [pytest]
   filterwarnings =
       ignore::pytest.RemovedInPytest4Warning

But this will stop working when pytest ``4.1`` is released.

**If you have concerns** about the removal of a specific feature, please add a
comment to `4348 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4348>`__.

- `4358 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4358>`_: Remove the ``::()`` notation to denote a test class instance in node ids.

Previously, node ids that contain test instances would use ``::()`` to denote the instance like this::

   test_foo.py::Test::()::test_bar

The extra ``::()`` was puzzling to most users and has been removed, so that the test id becomes now::

   test_foo.py::Test::test_bar

This change could not accompany a deprecation period as is usual when user-facing functionality changes because
it was not really possible to detect when the functionality was being used explicitly.

The extra ``::()`` might have been removed in some places internally already,
which then led to confusion in places where it was expected, e.g. with
``--deselect`` (`4127 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4127>`_).

Test class instances are also not listed with ``--collect-only`` anymore.

Features
--------

- `4270 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4270>`_: The ``cache_dir`` option uses ``$TOX_ENV_DIR`` as prefix (if set in the environment).

This uses a different cache per tox environment by default.

Bug Fixes
---------

- `3554 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3554>`_: Fix ``CallInfo.__repr__`` for when the call is not finished yet.

3.10.1

==========================

Bug Fixes
---------

This also adds a new ``pytest_leave_pdb`` hook, and passes in ``pdb`` to the
existing ``pytest_enter_pdb`` hook.

- `4147 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4147>`_: Add ``--sw``, ``--stepwise`` as an alternative to ``--lf -x`` for stopping at the first failure, but starting the next test invocation from that test. See `the documentation <https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/cache.htmlstepwise>`__ for more info.

- `4188 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4188>`_: Make ``--color`` emit colorful dots when not running in verbose mode. Earlier, it would only colorize the test-by-test output if ``--verbose`` was also passed.

confusion.

- `4279 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4279>`_: Improve message and stack level of warnings issued by ``monkeypatch.setenv`` when the value of the environment variable is not a ``str``.

module is now output only if a higher verbosity level is specified (at least
"-vv").

3.9.0

=========================================================================

Deprecations
------------

- `3616 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3616>`_: The following accesses have been documented as deprecated for years, but are now actually emitting deprecation warnings.

* Access of ``Module``, ``Function``, ``Class``, ``Instance``, ``File`` and ``Item`` through ``Node`` instances. Now
 users will this warning::

       usage of Function.Module is deprecated, please use pytest.Module instead

 Users should just ``import pytest`` and access those objects using the ``pytest`` module.

* ``request.cached_setup``, this was the precursor of the setup/teardown mechanism available to fixtures. You can
 consult `funcarg comparison section in the docs <https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/funcarg_compare.html>`_.

* Using objects named ``"Class"`` as a way to customize the type of nodes that are collected in ``Collector``
 subclasses has been deprecated. Users instead should use ``pytest_collect_make_item`` to customize node types during
 collection.

 This issue should affect only advanced plugins who create new collection types, so if you see this warning
 message please contact the authors so they can change the code.

* The warning that produces the message below has changed to ``RemovedInPytest4Warning``::

       getfuncargvalue is deprecated, use getfixturevalue

- `3988 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3988>`_: Add a Deprecation warning for pytest.ensuretemp as it was deprecated since a while.

Features
--------

- `2293 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/2293>`_: Improve usage errors messages by hiding internal details which can be distracting and noisy.

This has the side effect that some error conditions that previously raised generic errors (such as
``ValueError`` for unregistered marks) are now raising ``Failed`` exceptions.

- `3332 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3332>`_: Improve the error displayed when a ``conftest.py`` file could not be imported.

In order to implement this, a new ``chain`` parameter was added to ``ExceptionInfo.getrepr``
to show or hide chained tracebacks in Python 3 (defaults to ``True``).

- `3849 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3849>`_: Add ``empty_parameter_set_mark=fail_at_collect`` ini option for raising an exception when parametrize collects an empty set.

- `3964 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3964>`_: Log messages generated in the collection phase are shown when
live-logging is enabled and/or when they are logged to a file.

- `3985 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3985>`_: Introduce ``tmp_path`` as a fixture providing a Path object.

- `4013 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4013>`_: Deprecation warnings are now shown even if you customize the warnings filters yourself. In the previous version
any customization would override pytest's filters and deprecation warnings would fall back to being hidden by default.

- `4073 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4073>`_: Allow specification of timeout for ``Testdir.runpytest_subprocess()`` and ``Testdir.run()``.

- `4098 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4098>`_: Add returncode argument to pytest.exit() to exit pytest with a specific return code.

- `4102 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4102>`_: Reimplement ``pytest.deprecated_call`` using ``pytest.warns`` so it supports the ``match='...'`` keyword argument.

This has the side effect that ``pytest.deprecated_call`` now raises ``pytest.fail.Exception`` instead
of ``AssertionError``.

- `4149 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4149>`_: Require setuptools>=30.3 and move most of the metadata to ``setup.cfg``.

Bug Fixes
---------

- `2535 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/2535>`_: Improve error message when test functions of ``unittest.TestCase`` subclasses use a parametrized fixture.

- `3057 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3057>`_: ``request.fixturenames`` now correctly returns the name of fixtures created by ``request.getfixturevalue()``.

- `3946 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3946>`_: Warning filters passed as command line options using ``-W`` now take precedence over filters defined in ``ini``
configuration files.

- `4066 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4066>`_: Fix source reindenting by using ``textwrap.dedent`` directly.

- `4102 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4102>`_: ``pytest.warn`` will capture previously-warned warnings in Python 2. Previously they were never raised.

- `4108 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4108>`_: Resolve symbolic links for args.

This fixes running ``pytest tests/test_foo.py::test_bar``, where ``tests``
is a symlink to ``project/app/tests``:
previously ``project/app/conftest.py`` would be ignored for fixtures then.

- `4132 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4132>`_: Fix duplicate printing of internal errors when using ``--pdb``.

- `4135 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4135>`_: pathlib based tmpdir cleanup now correctly handles symlinks in the folder.

- `4152 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4152>`_: Display the filename when encountering ``SyntaxWarning``.

Improved Documentation
----------------------

- `3713 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3713>`_: Update usefixtures documentation to clarify that it can't be used with fixture functions.

- `4058 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4058>`_: Update fixture documentation to specify that a fixture can be invoked twice in the scope it's defined for.

- `4064 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4064>`_: According to unittest.rst, setUpModule and tearDownModule were not implemented, but it turns out they are. So updated the documentation for unittest.

- `4151 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4151>`_: Add tempir testing example to CONTRIBUTING.rst guide

Trivial/Internal Changes
------------------------

- `2293 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/2293>`_: The internal ``MarkerError`` exception has been removed.

- `3988 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3988>`_: Port the implementation of tmpdir to pathlib.

- `4063 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4063>`_: Exclude 0.00 second entries from ``--duration`` output unless ``-vv`` is passed on the command-line.

- `4093 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4093>`_: Fixed formatting of string literals in internal tests.

3.8.2

=========================

Deprecations and Removals
-------------------------

- `4036 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4036>`_: The ``item`` parameter of ``pytest_warning_captured`` hook is now documented as deprecated. We realized only after
the ``3.8`` release that this parameter is incompatible with ``pytest-xdist``.

Our policy is to not deprecate features during bugfix releases, but in this case we believe it makes sense as we are
only documenting it as deprecated, without issuing warnings which might potentially break test suites. This will get
the word out that hook implementers should not use this parameter at all.

In a future release ``item`` will always be ``None`` and will emit a proper warning when a hook implementation
makes use of it.

Bug Fixes
---------

- `3539 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3539>`_: Fix reload on assertion rewritten modules.

- `4034 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4034>`_: The ``.user_properties`` attribute of ``TestReport`` objects is a list
of (name, value) tuples, but could sometimes be instantiated as a tuple
of tuples. It is now always a list.

- `4039 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4039>`_: No longer issue warnings about using ``pytest_plugins`` in non-top-level directories when using ``--pyargs``: the
current ``--pyargs`` mechanism is not reliable and might give false negatives.

- `4040 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4040>`_: Exclude empty reports for passed tests when ``-rP`` option is used.

- `4051 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4051>`_: Improve error message when an invalid Python expression is passed to the ``-m`` option.

- `4056 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/4056>`_: ``MonkeyPatch.setenv`` and ``MonkeyPatch.delenv`` issue a warning if the environment variable name is not ``str`` on Python 2.

In Python 2, adding ``unicode`` keys to ``os.environ`` causes problems with ``subprocess`` (and possible other modules),
making this a subtle bug specially susceptible when used with ``from __future__ import unicode_literals``.

Improved Documentation
----------------------

- `3928 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3928>`_: Add possible values for fixture scope to docs.

3.8.1

=========================

Bug Fixes
---------

- `3286 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3286>`_: ``.pytest_cache`` directory is now automatically ignored by Git. Users who would like to contribute a solution for other SCMs please consult/comment on this issue.

- `3749 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3749>`_: Fix the following error during collection of tests inside packages::

   TypeError: object of type 'Package' has no len()

- `3941 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3941>`_: Fix bug where indirect parametrization would consider the scope of all fixtures used by the test function to determine the parametrization scope, and not only the scope of the fixtures being parametrized.

- `3973 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3973>`_: Fix crash of the assertion rewriter if a test changed the current working directory without restoring it afterwards.

- `3998 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3998>`_: Fix issue that prevented some caplog properties (for example ``record_tuples``) from being available when entering the debugger with ``--pdb``.

- `3999 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3999>`_: Fix ``UnicodeDecodeError`` in python2.x when a class returns a non-ascii binary ``__repr__`` in an assertion which also contains non-ascii text.

Improved Documentation
----------------------

- `3996 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3996>`_: New `Deprecations and Removals <https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/deprecations.html>`_ page shows all currently
deprecated features, the rationale to do so, and alternatives to update your code. It also list features removed
from pytest in past major releases to help those with ancient pytest versions to upgrade.

Trivial/Internal Changes
------------------------

- `3955 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3955>`_: Improve pre-commit detection for changelog filenames

- `3975 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3975>`_: Remove legacy code around im_func as that was python2 only

3.8.0

=========================

Deprecations and Removals
-------------------------

- `2452 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/2452>`_: ``Config.warn`` and ``Node.warn`` have been
deprecated, see `<https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/deprecations.htmlconfig-warn-and-node-warn>`_ for rationale and
examples.

- `3936 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3936>`_: ``pytest.mark.filterwarnings`` second parameter is no longer regex-escaped,
making it possible to actually use regular expressions to check the warning message.

**Note**: regex-escaping the match string was an implementation oversight that might break test suites which depend
on the old behavior.

Features
--------

- `2452 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/2452>`_: Internal pytest warnings are now issued using the standard ``warnings`` module, making it possible to use
the standard warnings filters to manage those warnings. This introduces ``PytestWarning``,
``PytestDeprecationWarning`` and ``RemovedInPytest4Warning`` warning types as part of the public API.

Consult `the documentation <https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/warnings.htmlinternal-pytest-warnings>`__ for more info.

- `2908 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/2908>`_: ``DeprecationWarning`` and ``PendingDeprecationWarning`` are now shown by default if no other warning filter is
configured. This makes pytest more compliant with
`PEP-0506 <https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0565/recommended-filter-settings-for-test-runners>`_. See
`the docs <https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/warnings.htmldeprecationwarning-and-pendingdeprecationwarning>`_ for
more info.

- `3251 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3251>`_: Warnings are now captured and displayed during test collection.

- `3784 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3784>`_: ``PYTEST_DISABLE_PLUGIN_AUTOLOAD`` environment variable disables plugin auto-loading when set.

- `3829 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3829>`_: Added the ``count`` option to ``console_output_style`` to enable displaying the progress as a count instead of a percentage.

- `3837 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3837>`_: Added support for 'xfailed' and 'xpassed' outcomes to the ``pytester.RunResult.assert_outcomes`` signature.

Bug Fixes
---------

- `3911 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3911>`_: Terminal writer now takes into account unicode character width when writing out progress.

- `3913 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3913>`_: Pytest now returns with correct exit code (EXIT_USAGEERROR, 4) when called with unknown arguments.

- `3918 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3918>`_: Improve performance of assertion rewriting.

Improved Documentation
----------------------

- `3566 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3566>`_: Added a blurb in usage.rst for the usage of -r flag which is used to show an extra test summary info.

- `3907 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3907>`_: Corrected type of the exceptions collection passed to ``xfail``: ``raises`` argument accepts a ``tuple`` instead of ``list``.

Trivial/Internal Changes
------------------------

- `3853 <https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/3853>`_: Removed ``"run all (no recorded failures)"`` message printed with ``--failed-first`` and ``--last-failed`` when there are no failed tests.

* Correct line numbering for f-strings for complex embedded expressions

  When a f-string contained a complex expression, such as an attribute access,
  we weren't cloning all the subtree of the f-string expression for attaching the correct
  line number. This problem is coming from the builtin AST parser which gives for the f-string
  and for its underlying elements the line number 1, but this is causing all sorts of bugs and
  problems in pylint, which expects correct line numbering.

  Close PyCQA/pylint2434

* Make compatible with AST changes in Python 3.8.

* Subscript inference (e.g. "`a[i]`") now pays attention to multiple inferred values for value
