Zen kernel causes gnome-terminal (and its variations) to crash Gnome-Shell #35
Comments
That's a screenshot of a crash in Xorg, not a terminal application. |
My bad, Bad phrasing, I mean to describe that it crashes Gnome Shell with Xorg core dump as the result. When launching terminal application. |
That seems unlikely. Which kernels did you compare, and did you double-check? |
Mainline Arch and Zen. opening gnome-terminal through shortcut (in my case Win + T) caused Gnome Shell to throw up the "Oops, something went wrong" and I need to logout and restart the shell. |
doesn't happen with mainline kernel. i am on arch btw. |
Does it happen if you add |
nope. doesn't crash anymore. |
Can you get a backtrace of the crash from |
OTOH, the Xorg crash seems like a red herring; it's probably another bug since you do get the Oops window, which you could not see if Xorg crashes. Check earlier in the logs. |
I am in bus I will check back in an hour and search through. Would be nice if you could throw me a couple of pointers where to look and what to get. Still learning through the arch wiki. |
If you don't know what to look for, just pastebin all the logs from that boot. |
Can't even locate damn logs (I mean from old boots). Hang on please. |
Here, journalctl for the entire day. Is this what you were looking for? |
This seems to be the problem:
systemd-dbus-proxyd is crashing. As this is a kdbus issue, please take it to https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues . |
I just wonder why it didn't crash on mainline kernel then with no kdbus on boot? |
systemd uses kdbus by default if it's available. The system bus seems to run into trouble as well (you can also see geoclue getting kicked off the bus), which causes Xorg to crash. |
Alright, so should I just leave the kdbus=0 for now until issue is fixed upstream? |
Yes. |
Alrighty then. Thanks a lot for the help! Appreciate the kernel and the support! Have a great rest of the day. |

================================================================== What this means is that the gadgetfs_suspend() routine was trying to access dev->lock after it had been deallocated. The root cause is a race in the dummy_hcd driver; the dummy_udc_stop() routine can race with the rest of the driver because it contains no locking. And even when proper locking is added, it can still race with the set_link_state() function because that function incorrectly drops the private spinlock before invoking any gadget driver callbacks. The result of this race, as seen above, is that set_link_state() can invoke a callback in gadgetfs even after gadgetfs has been unbound from dummy_hcd's UDC and its private data structures have been deallocated. include/linux/usb/gadget.h documents that the ->reset, ->disconnect, ->suspend, and ->resume callbacks may be invoked in interrupt context. In general this is necessary, to prevent races with gadget driver removal. This patch fixes dummy_hcd to retain the spinlock across these calls, and it adds a spinlock acquisition to dummy_udc_stop() to prevent the race. The net2280 driver makes the same mistake of dropping the private spinlock for its ->disconnect and ->reset callback invocations. The patch fixes it too. Lastly, since gadgetfs_suspend() may be invoked in interrupt context, it cannot assume that interrupts are enabled when it runs. It must use spin_lock_irqsave() instead of spin_lock_irq(). The patch fixes that bug as well. The patch fixes that bug as well. commit 263630e upstream. If madvise(..., MADV_FREE) split a transparent hugepage, it called put_page() before unlock_page(). This was wrong because put_page() can free the page, e.g. if a concurrent madvise(..., MADV_DONTNEED) has removed it from the memory mapping. put_page() then rightfully complained about freeing a locked page. Fix this by moving the unlock_page() before put_page(). [ Upstream commit a9d6227 ] Because 'q->flags' starts as zero, and zero is a valid value, we aren't able to detect the transition from zero to something else during "runtime". The solution is to initialize 'q->flags' with an invalid value, so we can detect if 'q->flags' was set by the user or not. To better solidify the behavior, 'flags' handling is moved to a separate function. The behavior is: - 'flags' if unspecified by the user, is assumed to be zero; - 'flags' cannot change during "runtime" (i.e. a change() request cannot modify it); With this new function we can remove taprio_flags, which should reduce the risk of future accidents. Allowing flags to be changed was causing the following RCU stall: [ 1730.558249] rcu: INFO: rcu_preempt detected stalls on CPUs/tasks: [ 1730.558258] rcu: 6-...0: (190 ticks this GP) idle=922/0/0x1 softirq=25580/25582 fqs=16250 [ 1730.558264] (detected by 2, t=65002 jiffies, g=33017, q=81) [ 1730.558269] Sending NMI from CPU 2 to CPUs 6: [ 1730.559277] NMI backtrace for cpu 6 [ 1730.559277] CPU: 6 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/6 Tainted: G E 5.5.0-rc6+ #35 [ 1730.559278] Hardware name: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. But btrfs_rm_device() itself can have case where it only receives @devid, with NULL as @device_path. In that case, calling strcmp() on NULL will trigger the NULL pointer dereference. Before that commit, we handle the "missing" case inside btrfs_find_device_by_devspec(), which will not check @device_path at all if @devid is provided, thus no way to trigger the bug. …ncurrent video sessions [ Upstream commit 91f2b7d ] In existing implementation, core_clk_setrate() is getting called concurrently in concurrent video sessions. Before the previous call to core_clk_setrate returns, new call to core_clk_setrate is invoked from another video session running concurrently. This results in latest calculated frequency being set (higher/lower) instead of actual frequency required for that video session. It also results in stability crashes mention below. These resources are specific to video core, hence keeping under core lock would ensure that they are estimated for all running video sessions and called once for the video core. Basic debug printks right before the mentioned line say: [ 0.048170] CPU: 1, smt_mask: So smt_mask, which is sibling mask obviously, is empty when entering the function. This is critical, as sched_core_cpu_starting() calculates core-scheduling parameters only once per CPU start, and it's crucial to have all the parameters filled in at that moment (at least it uses cpu_smt_mask() which in fact is `&cpu_sibling_map[cpu]` on MIPS). A bit of debugging led me to that set_cpu_sibling_map() performing the actual map calculation, was being invocated after notify_cpu_start(), and exactly the latter function starts CPU HP callback round (sched_core_cpu_starting() is basically a CPU HP callback). While the flow is same on ARM64 (maps after the notifier, although before calling set_cpu_online()), x86 started calculating sibling maps earlier than starting the CPU HP callbacks in Linux 4.14 (see [0] for the reference). Neither me nor my brief tests couldn't find any potential caveats in calculating the maps right after performing delay calibration, but the WARN splat is now gone. The very same debug prints now yield exactly what I expected from them: [ 0.048433] CPU: 1, smt_mask: 0-1 [0] https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mips/linux.git/commit/?id=76ce7cfe35ef Signed-off-by: Alexander Lobakin <alobakin@pm.me> Reviewed-by: Philippe Mathieu-Daudé <f4bug@amsat.org> Signed-off-by: Thomas Bogendoerfer <tsbogend@alpha.franken.de> Signed-off-by: Sasha Levin <sashal@kernel.org>
[ Upstream commit 2aaa8a1 ] With some IPv6 Ext Hdr (RPL, SRv6, etc.), we can send a packet that has the link-local address as src and dst IP and will be forwarded to an external IP in the IPv6 Ext Hdr. For example, the script below generates a packet whose src IP is the link-local address and dst is updated to 11::. # for f in $(find /proc/sys/net/ -name *seg6_enabled*); do echo 1 > $f; done # python3 >>> from socket import * >>> from scapy.all import * >>> >>> SRC_ADDR = DST_ADDR = "fe80::5054:ff:fe12:3456" >>> >>> pkt = IPv6(src=SRC_ADDR, dst=DST_ADDR) >>> pkt /= IPv6ExtHdrSegmentRouting(type=4, addresses=["11::", "22::"], segleft=1) >>> >>> sk = socket(AF_INET6, SOCK_RAW, IPPROTO_RAW) >>> sk.sendto(bytes(pkt), (DST_ADDR, 0)) For such a packet, we call ip6_route_input() to look up a route for the next destination in these three functions depending on the header type. * ipv6_rthdr_rcv() * ipv6_rpl_srh_rcv() * ipv6_srh_rcv() If no route is found, ip6_null_entry is set to skb, and the following dst_input(skb) calls ip6_pkt_drop(). Finally, in icmp6_dev(), we dereference skb_rt6_info(skb)->rt6i_idev->dev as the input device is the loopback interface. Then, we have to check if skb_rt6_info(skb)->rt6i_idev is NULL or not to avoid NULL pointer deref for ip6_null_entry. We should pass a pointer to global_hook to the get_proto_defrag_hook() instead of its value, since the passed value won't be updated even if the request module was loaded successfully. Since the field offset fits in imm12 or imm14, we use ldd or ldptrd instructions. But both instructions have the side effect that it will signed-extended the imm operand. Finally, we got the wrong addresses and panics is inevitable. Use a generic ldxd instruction to avoid this kind of issues. When subprog mode is enabled, we have: cls_redirect() -> get_global_metrics() returns pcpu ptr 0xfffffefffc00b480 The pointer returned is later signed-extended to 0xfffffffffc00b480 at `BPF_JMP | BPF_EXIT`. During BPF prog run, this triggers unhandled page fault and a kernel panic. Drop the unnecessary signed-extension on return values like other architectures do. With this change, we have: # ./test_progs -t cls_redirect Can't find bpf_testmod.ko kernel module: -2 WARNING! When we are slave role and receives l2cap conn req when encryption has started, we should check the enc key size to avoid KNOB attack or BLUFFS attack. From SIG recommendation, implementations are advised to reject service-level connections on an encrypted baseband link with key strengths below 7 octets. A simple and clear way to achieve this is to place the enc key size check in hci_cc_read_enc_key_size() The btmon log below shows the case that lacks enc key size check. > HCI Event: Connect Request (0x04) plen 10 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) Class: 0x480104 Major class: Computer (desktop, notebook, PDA, organizers) Minor class: Desktop workstation Capturing (Scanner, Microphone) Telephony (Cordless telephony, Modem, Headset) Link type: ACL (0x01) < HCI Command: Accept Connection Request (0x01|0x0009) plen 7 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) Role: Peripheral (0x01) > HCI Event: Command Status (0x0f) plen 4 Accept Connection Request (0x01|0x0009) ncmd 2 Status: Success (0x00) > HCI Event: Connect Complete (0x03) plen 11 Status: Success (0x00) Handle: 1 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) Link type: ACL (0x01) Encryption: Disabled (0x00) ... > HCI Event: Encryption Change (0x08) plen 4 Status: Success (0x00) Handle: 1 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) Encryption: Enabled with E0 (0x01) < HCI Command: Read Encryption Key Size (0x05|0x0008) plen 2 Handle: 1 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) > HCI Event: Command Complete (0x0e) plen 7 Read Encryption Key Size (0x05|0x0008) ncmd 2 Status: Success (0x00) Handle: 1 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) Key size: 6 // We should check the enc key size ... > ACL Data RX: Handle 1 flags 0x02 dlen 12 L2CAP: Connection Request (0x02) ident 3 len 4 PSM: 25 (0x0019) Source CID: 64 < ACL Data TX: Handle 1 flags 0x00 dlen 16 L2CAP: Connection Response (0x03) ident 3 len 8 Destination CID: 64 Source CID: 64 Result: Connection pending (0x0001) Status: Authorization pending (0x0002) > HCI Event: Number of Completed Packets (0x13) plen 5 Num handles: 1 Handle: 1 Address: BB:22:33:44:55:99 (OUI BB-22-33) Count: 1 #35: len 16 (25 Kb/s) Latency: 5 msec (2-7 msec ~4 msec) < ACL Data TX: Handle 1 flags 0x00 dlen 16 L2CAP: Connection Response (0x03) ident 3 len 8 Destination CID: 64 Source CID: 64 Result: Connection successful (0x0000) Status: No further information available (0x0000) Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Alex Lu <alex_lu@realsil.com.cn> Signed-off-by: Max Chou <max.chou@realtek.com> Signed-off-by: Luiz Augusto von Dentz <luiz.von.dentz@intel.com>

Ignore the userspace provided x2APIC ID when fixing up APIC state for KVM_SET_LAPIC, i.e. make the x2APIC fully readonly in KVM. Commit a92e254 ("KVM: x86: use hardware-compatible format for APIC ID register"), which added the fixup, didn't intend to allow userspace to modify the x2APIC ID. In fact, that commit is when KVM first started treating the x2APIC ID as readonly, apparently to fix some race: static inline u32 kvm_apic_id(struct kvm_lapic *apic) { - return (kvm_lapic_get_reg(apic, APIC_ID) >> 24) & 0xff; + /* To avoid a race between apic_base and following APIC_ID update when + * switching to x2apic_mode, the x2apic mode returns initial x2apic id. + */ + if (apic_x2apic_mode(apic)) + return apic->vcpu->vcpu_id; + + return kvm_lapic_get_reg(apic, APIC_ID) >> 24; } Furthermore, KVM doesn't support delivering interrupts to vCPUs with a modified x2APIC ID, but KVM *does* return the modified value on a guest RDMSR and for KVM_GET_LAPIC. I.e. no remotely sane setup can actually work with a modified x2APIC ID. Making the x2APIC ID fully readonly fixes a WARN in KVM's optimized map calculation, which expects the LDR to align with the x2APIC ID. WARNING: CPU: 2 PID: 958 at arch/x86/kvm/lapic.c:331 kvm_recalculate_apic_map+0x609/0xa00 [kvm] CPU: 2 PID: 958 Comm: recalc_apic_map Not tainted 6.4.0-rc3-vanilla+ #35 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS Arch Linux 1.16.2-1-1 04/01/2014 RIP: 0010:kvm_recalculate_apic_map+0x609/0xa00 [kvm] Call Trace: <TASK> kvm_apic_set_state+0x1cf/0x5b0 [kvm] kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl+0x1806/0x2100 [kvm] kvm_vcpu_ioctl+0x663/0x8a0 [kvm] __x64_sys_ioctl+0xb8/0xf0 do_syscall_64+0x56/0x80 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x46/0xb0 RIP: 0033:0x7fade8b9dd6f Unfortunately, the WARN can still trigger for other CPUs than the current one by racing against KVM_SET_LAPIC, so remove it completely. Just as title suggests, linux-zen causes terminals to crash Gnome Shell upon launch (tty is unaafected since it's not using Xorg ("duuuh" xD)).
Here is the screenshot of the xorg core dump. Let me know if you need anything else more specific.
