@pieper Looks more helpful, thanks. A few suggestions:

1. The line export ZONE="use-east1-a" should probably read export ZONE="us-east1-a" ("us", not "use").
2. The line Each time you reboot the machine, run these commands: should read Then run these commands, which will also need to be rerun every time you reboot the machine:

One might also note that after logging out of the remote machine, it appears you need to hit CTRL-C to shut down the gcloud compute ssh ${VMNAME} -- -L 6080:localhost:6080 command and get back to the command prompt, since I guess there is a wrapper around the machine connection that starts the localhost?
