Releases: LukeRoss00/gta5-real-mod
Release 7
Mar 21: GTA V got yet another update, so to keep the mod working you must download the latest Script Hook V from Alexander Blade's page (http://www.dev-c.com/gtav/scripthookv/) and update the ScriptHookV.dll
file that you have in the game folder; the other files in ScriptHookV_1.0.XXXX.Y.zip
are unchanged and you don't need to replace them.
This release makes the mod compatible with the latest game update released by Rockstar on Dec 15, 2020 (version 1.0.2189.0, a.k.a. The Cayo Perico Heist update).
Please see the README for important instructions on setup and gameplay, especially if this is your first time using the mod.
The only file you need to download is GTAV_REAL_mod_by_LukeRoss_r7.rar (be sure to overwrite the old files if you had a previous release installed).
Important for Windows Mixed Reality users: Starting from release 5, the mod finally works correctly with WMR headsets! However, due to an issue in Microsoft's driver for SteamVR, in order to have correct tracking it is mandatory that you enable OpenXR. Since OpenXR support is still sort of experimental, both in my mod and in the world at large, it is not enabled by default because it might break the mod for many other users. You will need to activate it manually by doing two things after extracting the mod and before running the game:
- Make the Windows Mixed Reality OpenXR Runtime active by launching Mixed Reality Portal from the Start menu, clicking the ... menu in the lower-left and selecting "Set up OpenXR". See this page for pics and more information: note that you won't need to enable the Windows Mixed Reality simulator, as that's only for developers.
- Edit the
RealVR.ini
file with a text editor like Notepad (do not use anything fancy like Word) and change the lineVRAPI = 0
toVRAPI = 3
in order to have the mod render using the OpenXR backend.
If you're still seeing tracking glitches or stutters when you turn your head, make sure that you have your Windows Settings> Mixed Reality> Experience Options
set to Best visual quality
. This seems to be the only way to disable motion smoothing, which is not compatible with the mod. Also, do NOT set a Custom render scale other than 100% in the "OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality", because it will lead to image warping due to a bug in the Microsoft runtime.
CHANGELOG:
- Fixed the random crashes introduced by game version 1.0.2189.0 on Release 6
- Updated Script Hook V
- Fixed an issue where recentering the view on SteamVR could lead to a brief stutter
Enjoy one of the greatest games ever created, as now you can be inside it!
Release 6
Sep 12 Update: Rockstar is on an update spree, so in order to keep the mod working you should always download the latest Script Hook V from Alexander Blade's page (http://www.dev-c.com/gtav/scripthookv/) and update the ScriptHookV.dll
file that you have in the game folder; the other files in ScriptHookV_1.0.XXXX.Y.zip
are unchanged and you don't need to replace them.
This release makes the mod compatible with the latest game update released by Rockstar on Aug 11, 2020 (version 1.0.2060.0).
Please see the README for important instructions on setup and gameplay, especially if this is your first time using the mod.
The only file you need to download is GTAV_REAL_mod_by_LukeRoss_r6.rar (just overwrite the old files if you had a previous release installed).
Important for Windows Mixed Reality users: Starting from release 5, the mod finally works correctly with WMR headsets! However, due to an issue in Microsoft's driver for SteamVR [Dec 14 Update: The issue should be fixed as of Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR Beta 1.2.485; nope, still broken], in order to have correct tracking it is mandatory that you enable OpenXR. Since OpenXR support is still sort of experimental, both in my mod and in the world at large, it is not enabled by default because it might break the mod for many other users. You will need to activate it manually by doing two things after extracting the mod and before running the game:

CHANGELOG:
- Fixed the low frame rate issues that Release 5 had with game version 1.0.2060.0
- Updated Script Hook V
- Fixed a very slight crosshair misalignment that could be seen with VR headsets that don't have a perfectly simmetrical FOV between the two eyes (like the Valve Index)
Enjoy one of the greatest games ever created, as now you can be inside it!
Release 5 (WMR at last!)
Aug 11: Rockstar updated the game again, and now the mod is broken (very low frame rate). I will make a new release as soon as I can fix all the problems. You can also see #240.
Please see the README for important instructions on setup and gameplay, especially if this is your first time using the mod.
Starting from this release, the mod should finally work correctly with Windows Mixed Reality headsets! Kudos to Microsoft for making this possible with their OpenXR runtime, and a special thank you to u/TymAtMSFT for pointing me in the right direction. My gratitude also goes to Reddit user u/coru182, who did an amazing job beta testing this new release and tirelessly experimenting and helping me figure out several annoying issues.
The only file you need to download is GTAV_REAL_mod_by_LukeRoss_r5.rar (just overwrite the old files if you had a previous release installed).
Important for WMR users: At the moment, in order to have correct headset tracking that will allow you to experience the mod the way it was always meant to be played, it is mandatory that you enable OpenXR. Since OpenXR support is still sort of experimental, both in my mod and in the world at large, it is not enabled by default because it might break the mod for many other users. You will have to activate it manually by doing two things after extracting the mod and before running the game:
- Make the Windows Mixed Reality OpenXR Runtime active by launching Mixed Reality Portal from the Start menu, clicking the ... menu in the lower-left and selecting "Set up OpenXR". See this page for pics and more information: note that you won't need to enable the Windows Mixed Reality simulator, as that's only for developers.

RealVR.ini
file with a text editor like Notepad (do not use anything fancy like Word) and change the lineVRAPI = 0
toVRAPI = 3
in order to have the mod render using the OpenXR backend.
Update 8 Jul: If you're still seeing tracking glitches or stutters when you turn your head, make sure that you have your Windows Settings> Mixed Reality> Experience Options
set to Best visual quality
.
This release also adds a feature that was highly requested by a few players (u/iupvoteevery comes to mind ^_^): gyroscopic stabilization of the first person camera when aboard a vehicle. In other words, your view will no longer tilt as the vehicle you're in bounces and rolls around you. This mode can be activated using the End
hotkey, or setting GyroVehicle = 1
in the RealVR.ini
file; be warned that it leads to a somewhat comical effect when driving on highly irregular terrain, and it makes flying planes really weird and unnatural, so it's not selected by default. Note: the Allow Independent Camera Modes
workaround is no longer needed.
CHANGELOG:
- Implemented experimental support for OpenXR (needed for correct headtracking on WMR headsets)
- Added optional gyroscopic stabilization of the 1st person camera in vehicles
- Updated Script Hook V to support game version 1.0.1868.4 (aka the Epic Games Store version)
- Included previous hotfixes 4.1 and 4.2
Enjoy one of the greatest games ever created, as now you can be inside it!
Release 4
IMPORTANT! This release no longer works correctly with the current version of GTA V, even though Google/YouTube stubbornly keep sending people here. Use the current release instead.
May 27 Update: Due to the recent game updates pushed by Rockstar and the different version available on the Epic Games Store, in order to make the mod work now you should download the latest Script Hook V from Alexander Blade's page (http://www.dev-c.com/gtav/scripthookv/) and update the ScriptHookV.dll
file; the other files in ScriptHookV_1.0.1868.4.zip
are unchanged and you don't need to replace them.
Please see the README for important instructions on setup and gameplay, especially if this is your first time using the mod.
So many new features in this release! Full changelog below. But what I believe most people were waiting for... perfect VR in cutscenes!
The mod natively supports Oculus and SteamVR headsets. HMD detection is automatic: if you have an Oculus headset connected (with the OVR service running) when you start the game, the mod will use native Oculus rendering; otherwise it will launch in SteamVR mode. WMR and Pimax headsets are still not properly supported; I contacted both Microsoft and Pimax about the issues, and I know that Microsoft is working on them, so let's hope for good news soon! June 24 Update: Months have gone by and the mod is still unplayable with WMR headsets due to horrible tracking glitches: I made a post on Reddit and hope that Microsoft will give a definitive answer as to whether they are going to fix their driver or not.
The only file you need to download is GTAV_REAL_mod_by_LukeRoss_r4.rar (just overwrite the old files if you had a previous release installed).
Hotfix 4.1: Some users reported an issue where subtitles and other game messages that appear on the bottom of the screen were cut off on the left side. If you have a SteamVR headset, and you want to use MSAA with the mod, and you are having this problem, please replace the d3d11.dll
file from Release 4 with this one. This hotfix has no other changes, so it is not needed if you are not experiencing this specific issue.
Hotfix 4.2: If running the RealConfig.bat
file gives you errors like "The system cannot find the path specified" or "0 file(s) copied", it might be because the batch file assumes that your Documents folder is at %UserProfile%\Documents
. If you moved or redirected the folder (which happens for instance if you put it on OneDrive), please replace the RealConfig.bat
file from Release 4 with this one, then run it again.
CHANGELOG:
- Implemented a universal FOV fix (works during normal gameplay, in scripted animations, when aiming your weapon, AND in cutscenes!)
- Added a simple batch file for automatic configuration of the initial graphics options (with three presets, High-Medium-Low)
- No longer necessary to manually edit the settings file to put in your video card name
- Graphics options can now be changed dynamically while in-game (except for the base window resolution)
- Full support for all valid combinations of FXAA, MSAA, TXAA
- Added support for NaturalVision Remastered, VisualV, GTA 5 Redux, M.V.G.A. graphics overhaul mods
- Smoother camera rotation while on foot in 1st person
- The onscreen game window will no longer flicker (irrelevant for most normal users, but highly requested by streamers)
- Improved the camera reset logic upon recentering (no more tilted tennis courts!)
- Fixed even more corner cases for HUD and postprocessing effects during some missions
- Disabled heading control during skydiving (parachuting is now a LOT more fluid)
- Fixed an issue with helmets and camera FOV
- Improved camera management during forced 3rd person (e.g., Wasted/mission fail slow-mo animations)
Enjoy!
Release 3 (the New Decade update)
Please see the README for important instructions on setup and gameplay, especially if this is your first time using the mod.
The main feature of this release is the introduction of two new viewing modes for cutscenes (yay!). The first mode (dynamic stereo) is now the default as it addresses the issue of cutscene characters looking flat and too close to the viewer, while the second new mode (virtual screen) can be selected for a more traditional 2D approach to cutscenes. The original viewing mode is still available for people who prefer it, or just to make comparisons. Mind that even dynamic stereo does not imply a full FOV adjustment of the cutscene camera, which is still an open problem with GTA V, so don't expect miracles :-)
The mod natively supports Oculus and SteamVR headsets. HMD detection is automatic: if you have an Oculus headset connected (with the OVR service running) when you start the game, the mod will use native Oculus rendering; otherwise it will launch in SteamVR mode. Big kudos to Valve for rapidly making the necessary fixes to SteamVR in order to have alternate eye rendering work correctly. WMR and Pimax headsets are still not properly supported, but both Microsoft and Pimax are aware of the issues, so let's hope for good news soon.
If you want to use SteamVR, make sure that:
- your SteamVR version is 1.9.13 or later;
- Motion Smoothing is off;
- "Use Desktop Game Theatre while SteamVR is active" is not checked in the game properties page for Steam;
- you're not accidentally injecting Revive into the game.
The only file you need to download is GTAV_REAL_mod_by_LukeRoss_r3.rar (just overwrite the old files if you had a previous release installed).
CHANGELOG:
- New dynamic stereo mode for cutscenes (default)
- New 2D virtual screen mode for cutscenes (selectable)
- Added a configuration file to set user defaults for mod options
- Monoscopic rendering should now be working correctly with SteamVR too (feedback would be appreciated)
Enjoy!
Release 2
This is a maintenance release for the mod that fixes a few issues and, perhaps most importantly, introduces experimental native support for SteamVR headsets. HMD detection is automatic: if you have an Oculus headset connected with the OVR service running when you start the game, the mod will use native Oculus rendering; otherwise it will activate the new SteamVR support.
For SteamVR to work correctly, you will need at least the 1.9.13 SteamVR beta, and you must make sure that Motion Smoothing is turned off. Please put all feedback regarding the SteamVR mode here. I won't be able to respond to issues posted on Reddit or elsewhere.
This version is NOT compatible with Revive. If you had tried Revive with the previous release, please remove any Revive-related dll's like LibRevive64_1.dll
from the GTA V folder and don't inject Revive into the game.
The only file you need to download is GTAV_REAL_mod_by_LukeRoss_r2.rar (just overwrite the old files if you had a previous release installed).
The README with instructions for setup and gameplay has been updated here.
CHANGELOG:
- Updated for game version 1.0.1868.0
- Experimental support for SteamVR headsets
- Fixed aiming with scopes in third person
- Added an option to have heading control active only when aiming
- Fixed an issue with ATMs that could lead to head tracking misbehaving
- Updated to Oculus SDK 1.43
Enjoy!
