Visual changes like this are always a bit problematic, because people don't always like the changes.
I think the clean window was designed to match the look of the Microsoft Office suite, do you know how the buttons there behave?

I changed it because it has more visual contrast than the old version, whose buttons are so black that you can’t really see them on the darker backgrounds.
Another change is the new "x" shape used in MS office 2013
