Confocal Microscopy Specialist, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences

Kim Fendrich is a Confocal Microscopy Specialist at AMNH in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Her work involves the use of a confocal microscope and custom attached Raman spectrometer to analyze samples of Comet 81P/Wild 2 that were returned to Earth via the NASA Stardust mission. The objective is to locate grains embedded in silica aerogel (the capture medium) and characterize them in situ. These non-destructive methods are used to determine the mineralogy of Stardust grains and constrain their original properties (prior to collection) in order to identify those that warrant further investigation.
