@gaearon What do you think about multiple .env support?
If you are OK with this I will provide tests for this feature according to new e2e test (kitchensink).

I'm really conflicted about this: #1343 (comment).

Can you explain why they recommend against it, and why you think their recommendation is incorrect in our case?

@tuchk4

tuchk4 commented Feb 24, 2017

I think this is ok for our case at least because that we use .env config for frontend app.

I mean that console.log(process.env.REACT_APP_X); will be replaced to console.log('%value_of_REACT_APP_X%'); because browser has no process or env.

So it is not possible to set env variables for build.js. But you can build app bundle according to needed env.

Should I commit my .env file? - No

Anyway this depends on developers. Current PR should not answer on this question because CRA started to support .env earlier.
From my point of view - it is OK for frontend application. Such env configs very useful for example for:

  • Public API Tokens (Google Auth, Maps, Social Networks etc)
  • Server API host / prefix / version

And this is public information so no problems with security.

Passwords, Connection Strings etc. mostly for backend applications. Of course app can be isomorphic but it is architecture depends on its developers and CRA has nothing to do with.

Should I have multiple .env files? - No

docs also says that having a "main" .env file and an "environment" .env configs like (.env.test / .env.staging) is OK.

Here is additional example from dotenv-rails docs - what .env* configs could be used:

.env - The Original®
.env.development, .env.test, .env.production - Environment-specific settings.
.env.local - Local overrides. This file is loaded for all environments except test.
.env.development.local, .env.test.local, .env.production.local - Local overrides of environment-specific settings.

Since there's a precedent, I'm happy to support the exact equivalent of https://github.com/bkeepers/dotenv#what-other-env-files-can-i-use.

Update PR. Seems everything works correctly but I want to check it one more time.

  • Update kitchensink test integration/env.test.js
  • Update docs (README.md) but seems I have problems with docs writing :)
  • There is a new file config/loadEnv.js. Before I placed it to utils but utils are not available after eject. So I just moved it to config. Maybe it is better find another way to load env configs.

What .env* files are used?

  • .env - Default
  • .env.development, .env.test, .env.production - Environment-specific settings.
  • .env.local - Local overrides. This file is loaded for all environments except test.
  • .env.development.local, .env.test.local, .env.production.local - Local overrides of environment-specific settings.

Files priority (file is skipped if does not exist):

  • npm test - .env.test.local, env.test, .env.local, .env
  • npm run build - .env.production.local, env.production, .env.local, .env
  • npm start - .env.development.local, env.development, .env.local, .env

Priority from left to right.

I temporarily canceled the Travis build because I'm trying to get 0.9.x branch to run e2e tests asap so that we can release a few bugfixes. Please don't commit for a few hours 😛

I really want to get this for 0.10 so appreciate the work you're doing.

@EnoahNetzach was there a reason you included the periods? I don't want to remove them if they were there for a reason.

You mean in the expect?
I usually insert them as an extra caution to ensure that the expected string is placed exactly where I want to.

Is it extremely necessary? No :P

That was a check that variables from .env are available in the app.

I removed this line because of added a bit more checks below that covers previous case

@tuchk4 Sorry for the trouble. We merged a long-submitted PR that better modularized the scripts between the files, so that user’s start.js is less messy. Can you please rebase your PR on that? Is there more work to be done here except updating? Can’t wait to get this 😉

Yikes, @EnoahNetzach -- you're right. Unfortunately we had to switch to this for AppVeyor, see #1654.

Mind submitting a PR that temporarily limits this to something reasonable and errors out after the limit, e.g. 30 seconds?

So ... dotenv FAQ conflicts with this. 🤔 I don't even know what the right answer is but I'm very interested in this feature instead of trying to roll this my own by doing conditionals on process.env.NODE_ENV.

Is this PR just moving forward past the dotenv package FAQ advice? I'm just kind of confused. Checking in a .env is a nice way to set dev defaults for a repo. If I had a build server / CI then I could inject ENV values and ship. If I wanted to ship from my laptop I could have an npm task that imports the right file as tacomanator does here.

"scripts": {
  "build": "sh -ac '. .env.${REACT_APP_ENV}; react-scripts build'",
  "build:staging": "REACT_APP_ENV=staging npm run build",
  "build:production": "REACT_APP_ENV=production npm run build",
  ...
}

I guess this snippet is how it would work currently without this PR, and this PR does something very similar by convention (file order as described by @tuchk4)? Very cool regardless. 🌻

Yea, I guess we just disagree with their FAQ because in client side code you are leaking any values into the client anyway. So you can't use it for anything sensitive.

Maybe there's a clearer way to explain this though.

@gaearon I just read this article and supporting multiple environment files is great, but was wondering why you are following a path to bake environment into compiled application?

Because create-react-app does not support a single build that can be configured from the outside via environment variables at runtime, I typically do not recommend it for my clients who follow 12 factor app principles with Docker.

Wouldn't a better approach be to provide a mechanism of runtime injection so if we build a create-react-app inside a Docker container, we can 1) use the same container across environments rather than have to build a separate container per environment and 2) support more dynamic environment-variable based configurations (eg. defer environment variables to the container scheduling phase)?

gaearon commented May 20, 2017

Happy to discuss any proposals in a separate issue!

It's important though to note that CRA always produces static bundles, and they are expected to work in any environment regardless of server, container, etc.
