This feature has already been wished for by users. I think you chose a good way to implement it. I cannot see any problems with merging it.

One more thing moved and cleanup from Qdev-dk qcodes
Currently the default matplotlib colormap is Viridis (<= 2.0) and hot for pyqtgraph
This is a default change for matplotlib as the default colormap will change from viridis to hot to unify the colormaps but we could go the other way too
