I'm inclined to call this a packaging issue since the desktop file is named incorrectly AFAICT.

From @jansol's thread on the linked issue:

AFAICT the correct solution for both Wayland and X11 desktops is to ensure the name of the desktop file matches the application ID (i.e. dev.zed.Zed.desktop).

I believe this is correct, Void is currently using /usr/share/applications/zed.desktop, renaming that file to dev.zed.Zed.desktop should be sufficient.
