Monthly Update: 2018.10.31

Zero Active Users

While our shallow user count has grown, our active user count is still 0.

Product Update

This month we managed to fix most of the things blocking people from getting active use out of Simula.

  1. Simula now supports all Linux apps. Simula has implemented XWayland, which means that all Linux applications (Wayland + X11) should launch inside our compositor. This means that firefox, chrome, and emacs are now all compatible within Simula.
  2. GTK+ segfaults are subverted. People experiencing GTK+ segfaults should now be able to subvert this error by running X apps (i.e., instead of running epiphany, just run firefox/chrome).
  3. Simula is now easier to install. Simula is tethered to weston3, which as we learned last month some bleeding edge distros don’t provide. Simula now builds this internally so that users don’t have to install it manually.

The major remaining bug to fix is the keystrokes bug, where certain SHIFT + * combinations fail to work.

Fundraising Update

  1. Deck. Last month we made a deck which outlines Simula’s overall strategy.

Check it out here (some material redacted).

  2. Institutions. We’ve started some discussions with some institutions for fundraising. We’re doing this because everyone who is currently working on Simula is doing so for free (which is not sustainable :).
  3. YC rejection. Our YCW19 application was rejected. This is not surprising, since YC cares quite a bit about traction, and Simula’s active user count is precisely 0. While painful, all we can do is take the feedback constructively and focus on making Simula useful enough for people to use for more than 1hr/day.
