How phenotypes can be predicted from the corresponding genotypes is an important question in the post-genomic era. Whole cell mathematical model is a vital tool to aggregate knowledge of an organism. Different types of models can be developed and a computationally simulatable model, such as one built using differential equations, can be used to evaluate state of the art knowledge of an organism. A model can be based on different cellular levels, from reactions to gene regulations; or even with spatial considerations. This article will also list the current tools available for model building and simulation, before an illustration of the recent applications of whole cell modelling.
