Description

Problem*

Resolves

Summary*

First basic implementation of u128 in Noir, doing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and with some conversion utilities.
It assumes the base field is larger than 128 bits.

Additional Context

Documentation*

No documentation yet because it is an on-going development (more PRs will follow) of an experimental feature

Check one:

  • [X No documentation needed.
  • Documentation included in this PR.
  • [Exceptional Case] Documentation to be submitted in a separate PR.

PR Checklist*

  • I have tested the changes locally.
  • I have formatted the changes with Prettier and/or cargo fmt on default settings.

It assumes the base field is larger than 128 bits.

We have the modulus_num_bits stdlib function which we can assert on. This'll then get compiled out again if we're using a compatible field.

We have the modulus_num_bits stdlib function which we can assert on. This'll then get compiled out again if we're using a compatible field.

Good point, but I wonder where I would add the check. Doing it on every function seems laborious, may be in a U128::new(lo,hi) function?

Yeah, I think a new function would be useful here. We don't want users to be instantiating this directly due to the risk of passing invalid values anyway.

I have enriched the features with subtraction, multiplication and division, and the new() method as well.

I added the U128 to the prelude and have the frontend to replace u128 with U128 under the hood so it can be used like a native type.

I've implemented the Ord trait and switched over to using operator overloads rather than calling methods directly.

What is there left to do on this? Could we merge as is and add the remaining items in a follow up PR?

@kevaundray

Spoke offline, we can remove the changes made to the compiler and merge this in. The remaining item was adding as but we don't need to

@guipublic

u128 is reverted to U128, PR should be ready for merge.
