Description

After #4063 we are able to cache parsing results.

This PR showcases naive caching in the LSP

Tagging reviewers for opinions on the approach. I think this approach should work fine since the parsing results (ParsedModule, ParserError) do not contain references to other FileIds, so caching by path should be fine. We might want to use some kind of limited size data structure for the cache instead of a ever-growing hashmap though.

Cached parsing would make a difference in two places:

  1. on-save where we would get faster feedback around possible errors
  2. on-change where we currently don't do parsing/collection, it would allow for quicker feedback but depending on the performance could be annoying as well, this could be configurable, enabled by default.

In other scenarios definitions are already cached from on-save.

Yeah that'd be perfect! In my tests I see that the initial parse after starting the LSP is slower due to the more complex diffing logic but then it's amazingly fast:

Time after insert files into file manager: 1.830457ms
Cache miss for file "/mnt/user-data/alvaro/aztec-packages/yarn-project/noir-protocol-circuits/src/crates/types/src/hash.nr"
Time after parse files: 10.958119ms
Time after process document: 58.831633ms

@kobyhallx Is this the correct approach for having LSP settings? accept it as init param and have the current value in the state? Or is there a better way available in the LSP library or something?

Yes, exactly, take it from init params and keep in state.

Should we merge this? makes a huge change in responsiveness of the LSP. We can switch the hashmap to an LRU cache if you're not confident on the memory usage, but I'd argue that we could do that for all other caches in LSPState in the future
