Build example 1: For the not so tech savvy: A pre built unit or kit from e.g. Amazon

This is probably the simplest, but also least flexible solution to get you started.

What it can do for you

  • Receive ADS-B targets and forward them to the EFB of your choice
  • Receive 868Mhz targets (OGN) and forward them to the EFB of your choice
  • Optional: provide AHRS, barometric pressure, fan control

What it will look like

How to get it

Pre-built kits or pre-built Stratux units usually come in two different version.

  • The US version that comes with a 1090 Mhz SDR and the UAT Radio
  • The European version (e.g. sold by Drossair).

The European version is ready to use for Stratux Europe Edition and - as far as I know - comes preinstalled with it. You don't need to do anything at all.

The US version's UAT radio can not be used to receive 868Mhz OGN targets and therefore, this part needs to be replaced with an OGN-capable RTL-SDR. You can use any of the readily available RTL-SDR dongles that fits your case, e.g. NooElec Nano 2 or Nano 3.

If you are unsure which version you have, open the case and look at the USB devices that are plugged in. If there is a device in there that looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/Stratux-UATRadio-Low-Power-v3/dp/B07JNSHCLQ you have the US version. If both of the RF dongles look the same, you have the European version.

Installing Stratux EU

The US version comes with the US software as well. The European version usually comes with Stratux EU preinstalled, but you might still want to upgrade to the latest version. You can download the latest version of Stratux EU here: https://github.com/b3nn0/stratux/releases.

There are several guides on Youtube on how to flash the software. See e.g. here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJmMdIvb8zE

Of course, make sure to use the image of the EU version, not the US version shown in the video.

Potential upgrades

See "Potential upgrades" section of the build 2. The device you have is equivalent to what is described there.
