Wifi Direct and Android mobile data while connected to Stratux

Stratux EU knows three modes for Wifi:

  • Classic Wifi AP (default)
  • Wifi Direct
  • AP+Client (experimental)

For many users, the AP mode is working just fine. If, however, you are on Android and would like to use mobile data while connected to your Stratux, Wifi Direct might be the better option. It's not super convenient, but it does the job.

Configure Wifi-Direct in the Stratux. I always recommend an 8 digit pin. After that, the Stratux will

  • Create a normal AP as fallback, called DIRECT-xxx (only if using 8 digit pin)
  • Create a Wifi-direct host device

Go to your Android Wifi settings and find some extended menu - found somewhere else on each device depending on ROM and Android version. There should be a menu point called Wifi-Direct. Click on it and you will see the Stratux with your selected name. Click on that and enter your pin to connect. Note that compared to normal Wifi, this does not auto connect. You will have to go into this menu every time you want to connect to your Stratux.
However, you can be connected to mobile data at the same time (or even to a second, normal Wifi network, as long as it uses a different IP range).

IMPORTANT

Due to a bug, Wifi-Direct wouldn't come up after a reboot in Version EU026. This was fixed in eu027. Please upgrade first.
