SafeSky integration

SafeSky is a mobile App for all types of pilot providing a situation awareness to everyone. The App is presenting an overview map, and also a radar with alerts reporting converging traffics.

Adding up SafeSky to your Stratux setup is creating a seamless eco-system that provides a unified GDL90 stream with your EFB (EasyVFR, SkyDemon, Air Navigation Pro...). As a pilot, you can then see simultaneously both traffic sources from your Stratux and from SafeSky.

Thanks to the OGN community, SafeSky is able to aggregate most transponder equipped traffic and uplink them using the GSM network. On top of such traffic, SafeSky has its own community of pilots (about 30 000 pilots), and shares all traffic back to OGN.

To improve security further, SafeSky is also relaying all traffic received from Stratux to all pilots, providing everyone with aircraft visibility in places that are not well covered with ground stations.

This eco-system is creating the most inter-operable traffic awareness system for both general aviation and ultra-light pilots.

Configuration

From SafeSky, you need to go to “Preferences” => “Traffic Sharing”.

Under the “Navigation” section, you can select your preferred EFB, and in the “External traffic device” section you can select “Stratux” from the list.

In case your Stratux is not using the default IP address 192.168.10.1, you can turn off “Automatic device discovery” and specify your Stratux IP.

If you need to distinct traffic from SafeSky and Stratux, you can enable “Highlight SafeSky traffic” which will prefix all SafeSky call-signs with “ss” in front. On the stratux configuration page, it’s also possible to enable the debugging mode which will prefix Startux call-signs with “ea”.

Usage with a single phone or tablet that has internet access

Simply connect your phone or tablet to the Stratux Wifi as normal. It’s then possible to either operate with SafeSky running in the background, and your EFB on the foreground, or use the split view feature of your iPad or Android tablet to see both screens simultaneously:

  • Simply start SafeSky, and click “Take off”
  • Start your EFB as before

You should see both traffic sources on your EFB.

Usage with a phone and a separate tablet

In the scenario where you have your EFB running on a tablet which does not have internet connectivity with a SIM card, you can still easily set things up:

  • Install SafeSky on your phone that has a SIM card
  • Connect your phone to the Stratux Wifi
  • Connect your tablet to the Stratux Wifi as before
  • Start SafeSky and click “Take off”
  • Start your EFB as before

You should see both traffic sources on your EFB.

A note for Android pilots:

  • On certain version, the phone will inform you that the wifi hotspot does not have any internet access, and will ask you if you want to route internet traffic to the GSM network. The answer is “Yes”
  • On other versions, this ability to route traffic is simply not possible. Therefore, you need to configure your Stratux to use "Wifi Direct": Wifi Direct and Android mobile data while connected to Stratux
