Agenda

  1. Welcome
  2. Review agenda
  3. Secretariat update
  4. Updates since last meeting (Team)
  5. Discussion on the progress of schema development (Choy)
    • Possibility to generalize the description of a volcanic ash cloud in VONA and QVA (see this link for details)
    • It is illegal to define elements with the same name but different types to be used with iwxxm:phenomenonProperties since these types are essentially defined at the same (root) level. We will need to either control the naming of these elements or consolidated under Package Meteorological Features.

Notes

  • Updates since last meeting:
    • With regard to the reinstating of IC back into Table 4678 and the https://codes.wmo.int/306/4678 codelist, the constraints had been passed back to WG-MRAD for discussion in the upcoming WG-MRAD/3 meeting in early Nov. Choy had raised for their consideration whether it would be acceptable to only introduce IC into IWXXM and its codelist but not TAC with a view to move on and not dragged behind by older technologies.
    • Jan raised potential issues when people are using TAC as a display format to present information translated from IWXXM messages. Choy pointed out that not only IC would create such issue, in fact we had already made TAC less capable to render the content in IWXXM messages with (1) the allowed use of more than 7 points in SIGMET, the reporting of more than 4 RVRs as needed, and the reporting of decimated temperature values. He thanked Jan's awareness and would forward this concern to the appropriate team (but so far no team has been identified to handle rendering concerns).
  • Discussion on the progress of schema development:
    • Choy presented the draft model and schemas of IWXXM VONA and QVACI.
    • Choy during the preparation of the agenda for the discussion on IWXXM VONA and QVACI had noticed that the geometry inferred from TAC VONA (e.g. those describing re-suspended volcanic ash and the observed volcanic ash cloud) were weird. The team discussed and was in consensus to explore possible consolidation in the review.
    • Choy pointed out that because elements like iwxxm:originatingCentre, iwxxm:phenomenonGeometry and iwxxm:phenomenonProperty are of any type, the name of element defined for use with these elements would be used directly (instead of only using their types with different element names). This also means that the name of these elements will practically be global. So it is not possible to define an element "volcano" under the WAFSSigWx package, the VONA package and the QVACI package at the same time as this is effectively re-defining the "volcano" element within the same namespace. Choy has thus consolidated these elements and put them into the MetFeature package for sharing by other packages. This should also be the general approach to be taken in future development of WxObjects.

Actions

  • As the implementation in respond to the proposed Amendment 81 to ICAO Annex 3 had been completed, all to review the changes in the PR in approximately one week's time.
  • Choy will, after the discussion on IWXXM VONA and QVACI, consolidate the changes and prepare the final RC1 for public consultation.

Next Meeting

  • TBA, depends on whether there is a need to have further discussions on the schemas before releasing RC1 for public consultation.
