Here you can assign a status to a game, e.g. if it has been cancelled or if an MMO game is no longer available. You can consult the game’s official website to verify a game’s status.

Empty:

Default option. If no other status fits the game, leave this blank. A released game should always have this field empty.

ALPHA:

The game has been released to a limited public. It is playable but is lacking a lot of features that would make it finished. This stage takes place before beta.

BETA:

The game has been released in an early phase, bugs and features are still being worked on. The stage takes place after the Alpha.

Early Access:

The game is in its early stages of development and incomplete in its features, but has been opened to the public. This stage can run in parallel with alpha and beta stages. An Early Access game is considered released and requires a release date, so users can rate and review it.

Offline:

The game is currently unavailable to play. A date the game went offline is possible to add. For example, servers for the MMO WildStar shut down in 2018 and is therefore no longer playable.

Cancelled:

The game’s development has been cancelled during its production and will not be shipped as a complete product. For example, the development of Starcraft Ghost never saw a full release. All cancelled games added to IGDB must have the following data points: Title, Description, some kind of media, and a reliable source of information about the game. This is to prove that the title once existed.

For games that released on some platforms but were cancelled for others, if the game would have been essentially the same on the cancelled platforms, you can add those platforms to the same game page. For example, Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge released for PC, Dreamcast, and PlayStation, but was cancelled for N64.

Games that were cancelled on older platforms and significantly changed before releasing on newer platforms should be submitted as their own page. For example, Rayman was originally in development for the Super Nintendo, but ultimately released on PlayStation.

The following will not be accepted on IGDB:

  • Tech demos that released as full games with a different name and theming
  • Failed pitches
  • Unannounced/unstarted sequels to games with cliffhanger endings
  • Cancelled fangames that did not get significantly far into development
  • Games mentioned as a theoretical possibility in interviews with developers
  • Games that changed title and direction as a natural part of development

Note: We would still consider a game ‘cancelled’ if the development reached for example a beta status but never got any form of release available for download (such as a demo). For games that got some kind of release in the past, but are no longer available, then a “delisted” or “offline” status might be more appropriate. If you're unsure, you can always reach out to us in Discord for a discussion.

The game has been rumored or leaked by multiple media sources. This tends to happen around big events such as E3 or through job postings by a developer/publisher. Typically only a title will exist for these games.

Delisted:

A delisted game is a title that has been removed from internet stores/listings. It's a pretty common event these days, and can occur for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is that a certain license or sponsorship has expired. For example, P.T. was delisted on the PlayStation Store following Konami's cancellation of Silent Hills.

Note: Do not mark a game as 'delisted' if it has been removed from one platform but is still available on others.
